Cambridge MPhil in Management: who can apply and how

Cambridge's MPhil in Management is a nine-month taught conversion course at the Judge Business School for new and recent graduates of any subject except business and management. That is the whole point of its entry rules: it asks for a first-class degree, rules out business and management degrees, limits management modules to three, and expects you to have graduated no earlier than one academic year before admission. It is not the MPhil in Finance and it is not an MBA. This guide sets out what Cambridge publishes for 2027-28 entry.

2027-28 entry · Official requirements

Who the course is for, and what to submit

Taken from the University of Cambridge's postgraduate course directory pages for the MPhil in Management and read again on 20 October 2026. Check every date on the course page before you rely on it, since some courses close early.

A first-class degree, but not in business or management

Applicants should have achieved a First class Honours degree. The undergraduate degree must not be in a business or management-related major, and no more than three modules at single or joint honours level may have been taken for credit in management or business-related subjects. Cambridge says the programme is aimed at students with less than one year of professional experience at the start.

Graduated no earlier than one academic year before admission

Applicants may be admitted provided that they completed their undergraduate degree no earlier than one academic year before admission. English: IELTS Academic 7.0 in each element with 7.5 in total, or TOEFL Internet 25 in each element with 110 in total. No ATAS certificate is required.

Three written pieces, with character limits

Applicants submit Reasons for Applying (1,500 characters), a JBS Teamwork statement (3,000 characters) and a JBS Quantitative Skills statement (2,000 characters). The quantitative statement concerns basic algebra, equations, basic calculus, graphs and introductory probability and statistics.

An online interview for shortlisted applicants

Shortlisted applicants are invited to an online interview, normally by video conference in Teams or Zoom.

Applications close on 25 February 2027

Applications opened on 9 September 2026 and close on 25 February 2027, and the course starts on 1 October 2027. The earliest decisions can be expected in January, with the majority finalised by the end of April. The course funding deadline is 8 December 2026.

No specific funding for the course

Cambridge says there are no specific funding opportunities advertised for this course; general University funding opportunities are listed separately.

A nine-month, entirely taught conversion course

The course is a nine-month full-time taught MPhil at the Judge Business School. Students take 11 core courses and electives. The core covers business analytics, operations management, organisational analysis and behaviour, and marketing, then business economics, finance and strategy, then accounting and the Management Consulting Project. One-on-one supervision is not provided and students do not engage in independent research.

Official sources

Read on 20 October 2026 on Cambridge's postgraduate course directory pages for the MPhil in Management. The page words the referee requirement two ways (see 'Before you apply'). The page's list of business and management-related modules was not read, so this guide does not say which modules count.

The programme

A conversion course, not a specialist research degree

Cambridge describes the MPhil in Management as a graduate conversion course that prepares graduates of other subjects for a career in management. It is entirely taught, with no independent research and no one-to-one supervision, and it ends with the Management Consulting Project as an implementation course. If you want research training or a finance specialisation, it is the wrong course; if you want a rigorous grounding in management after a degree in another subject, it is designed for you.

Eligibility

Three rules that decide whether you can apply

The rules are specific, and each can rule an applicant out before the quality of the application is considered.

Your degree subject

The degree must not be in a business or management-related major, and no more than three modules at single or joint honours level may have been taken for credit in management or business-related subjects. Cambridge publishes a list of such modules on the course page, which this guide has not read: check it module by module against your transcript.

Your timing

You may be admitted provided you completed your undergraduate degree no earlier than one academic year before admission. Cambridge also describes the course as aimed at students with less than one year of professional experience at the start.

Your grade

A First class Honours degree, or the equivalent for degrees outside the UK, for which Cambridge points to its international qualifications guidance.

Before you apply

The statements and referees

The application has three written statements, and the page words one requirement in two ways.

Reasons for Applying: 1,500 characters

A summary of why you chose the programme and how it can help your future career.

JBS Teamwork: 3,000 characters

Cambridge asks you to describe a time you acted as a leader and explain how your peers will benefit from your teamwork, since the programme draws on group discussion and group consulting work.

JBS Quantitative Skills: 2,000 characters

A summary of how you meet, or will acquire before the start, the level of basic algebra, equations, basic calculus, graphs and introductory probability and statistics that some modules assume.

Referees: confirm which type

The Selection Process section refers to two academic referees, while the list of things you will need says either academic or professional. Confirm with the course before you ask your referees, and give them time to submit by the course deadline.

Timing

Dates for 2027-28 entry

Applications opened on 9 September 2026 and close on 25 February 2027, with the course starting on 1 October 2027. Cambridge says the earliest decisions can be expected in January and the majority are finalised by the end of April, after the admissions committee has considered all applications. Some courses can close early, and the course funding deadline of 8 December 2026 is earlier than the application deadline, so decide early whether you will seek funding. Cambridge also says no specific funding is advertised for this course.

The interview

Online, for shortlisted applicants

Shortlisted applicants are invited to an online interview, normally by video conference in Teams or Zoom. Cambridge's page does not say what the interview covers, so prepare from the programme's aims: your reasons for applying, your teamwork, and your readiness for the quantitative modules.

Support

Independent support with eligibility, statements and the interview

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with the University of Cambridge or the Judge Business School. Master's support follows the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each programme. No outcome is promised.
