An MPhil-level Master's, not a professional one
The Master's should be an MPhil or equivalent, not a Professional Master's such as an MArch. Without one you would be expected to take an MPhil first.
Doctoral · Cambridge Architecture
The Cambridge PhD in Architecture says the Master's degree should be an MPhil or equivalent, not a Professional Master's such as an MArch, and that the Department can only accept candidates who have identified a potential supervisor willing to work with them. Cambridge expects a first-class or high II.i bachelor's degree, a Master's of at least 70% or equivalent, a proposal of 1,000 to 1,500 words and a sample of work. For an architect or built-environment graduate, the decision is whether your degree route is the right kind of Master's and who will supervise you. This guide sets out what Cambridge says for the 2027-28 cycle, marks Avandy's judgment separately and ends with next steps.
Official information · last verified for 2027-28 entry
Taken from Cambridge's PhD in Architecture course pages (overview, study, requirements and apply tabs) and read on 1 November 2026. The page describes 2027-28 entry. For a 2028-29 start, applied for in 2027-28, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; Cambridge's requirements, dates and funding for 2028-29 are awaiting publication, and none is stated here.
The Master's should be an MPhil or equivalent, not a Professional Master's such as an MArch. Without one you would be expected to take an MPhil first.
A first-class or high II.i bachelor's, with at least 67% or 3.6/4.0 GPA, is expected, and a Master's of at least 70% or equivalent.
The Department can only accept candidates who have identified a potential supervisor in the Department who is willing to work with them.
The proposal is inclusive of references and footnotes and includes a statement on design approach; the sample can be a chapter, publication or essay.
Shortlisted applicants are interviewed by the proposed supervisor and one other University Teaching Officer, remotely.

The decision
This guide concerns only the Cambridge research degree. The reading below is Avandy's judgment (heuristic), built from what the pages say about entry and the application.
you hold a first or high II.i and an MPhil-level Master's of at least 70% in architecture or a related discipline, and a University Teaching Officer's research matches your topic.
your Master's is a professional MArch. Cambridge says it should be an MPhil or equivalent, and that you would be expected to take an MPhil first.
The proposal asks for a statement on design approach, so say how a design-based method serves your research questions.
How the application is read
Cambridge recommends consulting the list of University Teaching Officers and their research interests, then emailing one directly with a short research proposal, an example of writing and a CV, and applying formally only once an established officer has said they would consider it. A supervisor suggesting a formal application is the first stage of admission administration, not an offer. The formal application needs a 1,000 to 1,500 word proposal, a sample of work of at most 5,000 words and the names of proposed supervisors. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed remotely by the proposed supervisor and one other officer.
How the degree runs
A doctoral degree at the Department offers independent research under the supervision of a staff member. Unless the candidate is part of a research group, the research is undertaken on their own with regular supervision. The Department welcomes applicants with a background in architecture, science, history and theory, and/or engineering. For students continuing from the MPhil, continuation needs a distinction in the MPhil by Research or at least 70% in the MPhil by Advanced Study, plus approval of the proposal and an available supervisor. This is the 2027-28 page and may change.
Avandy's judgment
These points are Avandy's heuristic reading of the pages. They are not Cambridge rules and carry no probability.
The page says the Master's should be an MPhil or equivalent, not an MArch.
The Department can only accept candidates with an identified, willing supervisor.
A suggestion to apply is only the first stage of administration.
The proposal is expected to include a statement on design approach.
Next steps
The order is Avandy's suggestion, built from the pages' own steps.
Confirm whether your Master's is MPhil-level or professional, and its mark.
Use the Department's list of University Teaching Officers and their interests.
Email the officer your short proposal, a writing example and a CV.
Prepare the full proposal, the sample and the referees once an officer is interested.
Planning for 2028-29 entry
Cambridge's course pages describes entry in 2027-28. A start in 2028-29 means applying in the 2027-28 cycle, under rules Cambridge has not yet published. Each item below is either last verified for 2027-28 entry, which means Cambridge published it for the previous cycle and it may change, or awaiting publication for 2028-29 entry.
The entry standard, the application items and the programme structure are described on Cambridge's pages for the 2027-28 cycle. Cambridge has not published the following cycle.
This guide states none of them. Cambridge publishes them per cycle on the course pages; read them again when they show 2028-29.
Check whether your Master's is MPhil-level, find a University Teaching Officer and email a short proposal before applying.
Support
Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with the University of Cambridge or any of its departments, and it has no relationship with any member of staff. Support sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant and a PhD-level Academic Mentor help the applicant test a research idea against the department's published research areas and plan their own statement. Support here is limited to testing a research idea against the department's published research areas and planning the applicant's own statement; it does not extend to contacting staff on the applicant's behalf. Avandy does not write or submit any part of an application, cannot arrange a supervisor and promises no outcome or funding.
