Cambridge PhD in Biochemistry: secure a group leader before you can apply

The Cambridge PhD in Biochemistry will not let you submit an application until a group leader has confirmed an available place in their laboratory. Cambridge asks for a Good II.i Honours degree, a Statement of Interest and a Research Proposal discussed with that supervisor, and it considers applications as they arrive, with most opportunities typically available in November and December. Registration for the PhD follows a First-Year Assessment. For a biochemistry or life-science graduate, the decision is which laboratories to approach and how early. This guide sets out what Cambridge says for the 2027-28 cycle, marks Avandy's judgment separately and ends with next steps.

What Cambridge asks for in Cambridge PhD in Biochemistry

Taken from Cambridge's PhD in Biochemistry course pages (overview, study, requirements and apply tabs) and read on 1 November 2026. The page describes 2027-28 entry. For a 2028-29 start, applied for in 2027-28, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; Cambridge's requirements, dates and funding for 2028-29 are awaiting publication, and none is stated here.

No application without a group leader

Cambridge says you must secure the support of a group leader or supervisor in a laboratory before submitting, and that you cannot submit without it. It does not guarantee an offer.

A Good II.i Honours degree

Applicants should have achieved a Good II.i Honours degree. Applicants with non-UK degrees check the University's International Qualifications page.

Statement of Interest and Research Proposal

The application needs an outline of your motivation and your choice of laboratory and project, and a Research Proposal you discuss with your prospective supervisor first.

Rolling admissions, with a busy November and December

Applications are considered as received, and most opportunities are typically available in November and December. Contact a supervisor before then where possible.

A First-Year Assessment before registration

Registration for the PhD is only possible after a satisfactory First-Year Assessment: a thesis report and an oral examination by two examiners.

Official sources

Read on 1 November 2026 on Cambridge's PhD in Biochemistry course pages (overview, study, requirements and apply tabs), which describes 2027-28 entry. Cambridge's deadline, fee and funding sections, the department's own pages, the University's application guidance and international qualifications pages were not used and are not stated. No deadline, fee, funding amount or place number is stated.

The decision

Which laboratories will you approach, and how early?

This guide concerns only the Cambridge research degree. The reading below is Avandy's judgment (heuristic), built from what the pages say about entry and structure.

It fits if

you hold a Good II.i or equivalent, can name one or more laboratories whose research you want to join and are ready to write to the group leaders.

Think again if

you have no supervisor in mind. Cambridge says an application cannot be submitted without one, so the supervisor search is the first task, not the last.

Non-UK degree

Cambridge sends non-UK applicants to its International Qualifications page to find the equivalent of a Good II.i in their country.

How the application is read

Supervisor, statement and proposal come in that order

Cambridge asks you to identify laboratories, make informal contact with the group leaders and receive confirmation of an available place before applying through the Applicant Portal. The Statement of Interest outlines your motivation and your choice of laboratory and project, and the Research Proposal is to be discussed with your prospective supervisor before you complete it. Applications are considered as received; the page says to expect a decision within six weeks of a completed application if a supervisor has been identified. For the 2027-28 admissions the page says shortlisted PhD students are invited for interview by a Committee in a virtual setting.

How the degree runs

A group, a thesis panel and a first-year gate

Students are based in a research group on a project agreed with the principal investigator, with an academic advisor and a Postgraduate Thesis Panel as additional mentorship. There is no formal examined coursework, but progress is assessed at stages. The First-Year Assessment is the most important: a thesis report and an oral examination by two examiners, and registration for the PhD follows a satisfactory outcome. Students then present a poster in the second year and a talk to the whole Department in the third. This is the 2027-28 page and may change.

Avandy's judgment

Where an application can go wrong

These points are Avandy's heuristic reading of the pages. They are not Cambridge rules and carry no probability.

Starting with the form

The portal will not accept the application without a supervisor's confirmation. Start with the laboratory list.

Writing the proposal alone

Cambridge says to discuss the Research Proposal with your prospective supervisor first.

Waiting for a deadline

Applications are considered as received, and most opportunities are typically available in November and December.

Applying for the visa document early

Cambridge says not to apply for an ATAS unless you have been made an offer.

Next steps

A sensible order of work

The order is Avandy's suggestion, built from the pages' own steps.

List the laboratories

Read the Department's research descriptions and choose one or more groups.

Contact the group leaders

Write informally to confirm they can supervise you and understand your project.

Draft with the supervisor

Prepare the Statement of Interest and discuss the Research Proposal with them.

Prepare the file

Gather two referees, a transcript, a CV and any English-language evidence the page asks for.

Planning for 2028-29 entry

Planning for 2028-29 entry: what carries over and what awaits publication

Cambridge's course pages describes entry in 2027-28. A start in 2028-29 means applying in the 2027-28 cycle, under rules Cambridge has not yet published. Each item below is either last verified for 2027-28 entry, which means Cambridge published it for the previous cycle and it may change, or awaiting publication for 2028-29 entry.

The structure of the route and the application

The entry standard, the application items and the programme structure are described on Cambridge's pages for the 2027-28 cycle. Cambridge has not published the following cycle.

Deadlines, places, funding and fees

This guide states none of them. Cambridge publishes them per cycle on the course pages; read them again when they show 2028-29.

What to do now

List the laboratories, write to the group leaders, and apply only after one confirms a place.

Support

Independent support with the research statement and fit

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with the University of Cambridge or any of its departments, and it has no relationship with any member of staff. Support sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant and a PhD-level Academic Mentor help the applicant test a research idea against the department's published research areas and plan their own statement. Support here is limited to testing a research idea against the department's published research areas and planning the applicant's own statement; it does not extend to contacting staff on the applicant's behalf. Avandy does not write or submit any part of an application, cannot arrange a supervisor and promises no outcome or funding.

Applications are considered as received, and most opportunities are typically available in November and December, so Cambridge advises contact with a supervisor before then where possible.

Do I register for the PhD straight away?

No. Registration is only possible after a satisfactory First-Year Assessment: a thesis report and an oral examination assessed by two examiners.

Does the PhD include funding?

This guide did not read Cambridge's funding sections and states no funding. Check the course pages for the cycle you apply in.
