Cambridge PhD in Education: supervisor, proposal and the 8 December deadline

An application to the Cambridge PhD in Education is built around three things you settle before you submit: a research question, a supervisor willing to consider it, and a written proposal. The application and course-funding deadline for 2027-28 entry is 8 December 2026. This guide sets out what Cambridge publishes and how to use the time that remains.

2027-28 entry · Official requirements

Entry standard, application components and dates

Taken from the University of Cambridge's postgraduate course page for the full-time PhD in Education and checked on 19 October 2026. The dates are for entry in October 2027. Confirm them on the course page before you submit.

A Master's, normally in Education or a related field

Cambridge sets the expected academic standard at a Master's degree (Pass), normally in Education or a discipline related to the proposed research. It also expects demonstrable research ability, and usually experience comparable to one year of full-time postgraduate research training.

Education or a closely related discipline

The subject of your earlier study should be Education or a discipline related to the research you propose. The link between the two should be easy for a reader to see from your proposal.

A research proposal and project title are mandatory

Every applicant submits a research proposal of up to 1,500 words (excluding the bibliography) and a project title, alongside five short written statements (motivation, responding to challenges, independent study, recent developments in your research area and technical skills), two references, a transcript and a CV.

Name a supervisor, and contact them first

The application asks you to name a proposed supervisor, or co-supervisory team, in the Faculty, and you must contact them before applying. Your application goes to that supervisor first; they recommend, and the Faculty's doctoral admissions team decides. Agreement from a supervisor is not a promise of an offer, and the Faculty does not assign supervisors.

Applications close on 8 December 2026

Applications opened on 9 September 2026 and close on 8 December 2026. The course starts on 1 October 2027 and lasts three to four years full time.

The funding deadline is the same date

Cambridge's course funding deadline is also 8 December 2026. The Gates Cambridge US round, which has its own deadline of 14 October 2026, has passed. Funding is limited, offers can be made without funding, and funding decisions start in February.

Official sources

Checked on 19 October 2026 on the course page and the Faculty of Education's Doctoral Paths page. This is a time-sensitive guide: the deadline is fixed, so allow for the time needed to make contact with a supervisor and to write the proposal.

The programme

A research degree built around one question

The PhD in Education is a full-time research degree in Cambridge's Faculty of Education. Rather than following a taught syllabus, you spend three to four years on a single project of your own, so the application itself is the main evidence of whether that project is sound. That is why the proposal, the project title and the supervisor sit at the centre of the form.

Who it suits

Reading the entry standard honestly

The stated standard, a Master's at Pass level with demonstrable research ability, is a threshold for consideration rather than a prediction of success. What an applicant can still shape is the quality of the question, the evidence that they can carry it out, and the fit with a supervisor. Applicants whose Master's is in another discipline should show a clear line from that training to the research they propose. Cambridge also says that applicants without a UK-equivalent Master's, or not currently studying for one, may still be considered if they can show they meet the standard for PhD study.

Supervisor first

Approaching a supervisor before you apply

Because Cambridge requires you to name a supervisor and to contact them first, this is the step to start first. A supervisor's agreement is information, not an offer, but a conversation that has never taken place cannot help you.

Read before you write

Read recent work by the people you might approach, and check that your question sits within what the Faculty of Education actually researches and teaches. A message that shows you have read someone's work is easier to answer than a general enquiry.

Make the first message easy to answer

Introduce yourself briefly, state the question in two or three sentences, and say what you are asking: whether the supervisor is open to considering the proposal. Attach a short outline only if it helps.

Plan for slow or negative replies

Supervisors may be unavailable or slow to reply. Approach more than one person where that is appropriate, and do not leave first contact until the weeks before 8 December 2026.

The research proposal

What a convincing doctoral proposal does

Cambridge requires a proposal and a project title; the precise format is set out on the course page. In general, the proposals that persuade do four things within the space available.

State a question that can be answered

A researchable question, narrow enough to be completed in the time and specific enough that a reader can judge what would count as an answer.

Locate it in the literature

Show what is already known, where the gap or disagreement lies, and why your question matters to that conversation.

Explain how you would study it

Describe the approach and methods and why they suit the question, including what evidence you would collect and from whom.

Show you can do it

Connect the proposal to your prior training, so that the reader sees why you are the person to carry it out.

A realistic timetable

Working back from 8 December 2026

Because the application and funding deadlines coincide, there is no later date to fall back on if you intend to apply for funding through Cambridge. Work back from 8 December 2026 rather than forward from today.

Now

Settle the research area and shortlist possible supervisors. Read their work.

Next

Make first contact, and begin drafting the proposal while you wait for replies.

Then

Revise the proposal against any feedback, and ask anyone who is supporting your application for their time well before the deadline.

Before 8 December 2026

Submit with margin to spare, not on the final day.

If this cycle is out of reach

When a later intake may serve you better

The dates above apply to October 2027 entry. If you cannot complete a sound proposal and a supervisor conversation by 8 December 2026, a later intake may serve you better than a rushed submission. Take the next cycle's dates from Cambridge's course page when they are published rather than assuming that they repeat.

How Avandy prepares

Research direction, supervisor fit and proposal quality

Doctoral support follows the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor. It is tailored to the candidate's field, and no outcome is promised.

Research direction and positioning

Defining the research question, its academic contribution and a viable doctoral direction.

Supervisor and research-group matching

Identifying appropriate supervisors, research groups and funding alignment.

Research proposal development

Developing originality, literature grounding, methodology and institutional fit into a credible proposal.

Supervisor engagement and interview preparation

Structuring supervisor outreach and follow-up academic conversations, and preparing for any interview.

Questions

Questions applicants ask

Do I have to contact a supervisor before I apply?

Yes. Cambridge asks you to name a proposed supervisor and requires you to contact them before applying. Their agreement is not a promise of an offer.

Is there a separate funding deadline?

The course funding deadline is also 8 December 2026, the same as the application deadline. The Gates Cambridge US round has its own deadline, 14 October 2026, which has passed.

Must I already hold a Master's degree?

Cambridge states the expected standard as a Master's (Pass), normally in Education or a related discipline, together with demonstrable research ability. Applicants without a UK-equivalent Master's, or not currently studying for one, may still be considered if they can show they meet the standard for PhD study, normally with experience comparable to a year of full-time postgraduate research training.

What if the supervisor I name cannot take me on?

Cambridge says that if your nominated supervisor decides not to proceed, the doctoral admissions team reviews the application to see whether another suitable supervisor is available. That is a review, not an allocation: the Faculty does not assign supervisors, and an application that names none may not be possible to evaluate.

Is there an interview, and when will I hear?

If you are invited to interview you are told by email; interviews can be in person or online, for example on Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Decisions are made as a gathered field, typically within 12 weeks of the funding deadline.

I am on a Cambridge Education Master's. Do I continue automatically?

No. Continuing from the Faculty's Master's to the doctorate is not automatic: it needs a doctoral application, as well as meeting the academic requirements for continuation.

How long does the PhD take?

Three to four years full time. The course starts on 1 October 2027 for the 2027-28 intake.
