Imperial Computing MEng: entry requirements, TMUA and the January window

Imperial's Computing MEng asks for a very strong mathematics record, a compulsory admissions test and an application in the January UCAS round. For applicants who have not yet taken the TMUA, the January test window is the one that matters, and its booking period opens on 26 October 2026. This guide sets out Imperial's published requirements for 2027 entry and a dated plan for the weeks ahead.

2027 entry · Official requirements

Entry requirements, test windows and deadlines

Taken from Imperial College London's official course page for the Computing MEng (2027 entry) and checked on 19 October 2026. The October 2026 test window has passed. Imperial's pages are the authority for booking and for any change to a date.

A*A*A to A*AAA, with A* in Mathematics

Imperial's minimum standard is A*A*A to A*AAA with an A* in Mathematics. Typical offers are A*A*A* or A*A*AA. IB applicants need at least 41 points, with 7 in Higher Level Mathematics and 7 in another relevant Higher Level subject; the typical IB offer is 42.

Mathematics is required; Further Mathematics is preferred

A-level Mathematics is required and Further Mathematics is preferred. Computer Science and Physics are recommended rather than required.

The TMUA is compulsory; the MAT is no longer used

Every applicant must sit the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA). Imperial no longer uses the Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT).

Two test windows for 2027 entry

The windows are 12–16 October 2026 and 4–8 January 2027. Candidates in China, Hong Kong and Macau can sit only on set dates: 15–16 October 2026 and 8 January 2027. The October window has passed.

Interviews are not standard

Interviews are not a standard part of the process but may be offered to some candidates at the admissions tutors' discretion.

January booking: 26 October to 21 December 2026

Booking for the January window opens on 26 October 2026 at 15.00 (UK time) and closes on 21 December 2026 at 18.00 (UK time). Bursary requests are due by 14 December and access-arrangement requests by 7 December. The test fee is £78 in the UK and Ireland and £133 elsewhere; January results are released on 8 February 2027.

UCAS deadline: 13 January 2027

The UCAS deadline is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 (UK time). The course lasts four years. Imperial reports 13 applications per place for 2025, a figure from Imperial and not an Avandy statistic.

The programme

A four-year integrated Master's in Computing

The Computing MEng (UCAS code G401) is taught by Imperial's Department of Computing and lasts four years. With 13 applications per place in 2025, entry is competitive, and the published requirements put mathematics at the centre: an A* in Mathematics is part of the minimum standard, and Further Mathematics is preferred.

Reading the offer

Minimum standard versus typical offer

Imperial publishes both a minimum entry standard and typical offers, and the two differ. Planning around the typical offer rather than the minimum gives a more realistic picture of what a strong application looks like.

The A-level range

The minimum range runs from A*A*A to A*AAA, with an A* in Mathematics required throughout. Typical offers are higher: A*A*A* or A*A*AA.

The IB route

The minimum is 41 points with 7 in Higher Level Mathematics and 7 in another relevant Higher Level subject. The typical offer is 42 points.

Subjects beyond Mathematics

Further Mathematics is preferred, while Computer Science and Physics are recommended. Because Computer Science is recommended rather than required, its absence from a school's timetable is not in itself a barrier to applying.

The TMUA

The test, the windows and what has already passed

The TMUA is a requirement for every applicant to this course, and the choice of window is the main practical decision. The October 2026 window has passed. Applicants who have not yet sat the test should plan around the January window.

The January window

Candidates in most countries sit between 4 and 8 January 2027. Candidates in China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on 8 January 2027 only.

Booking

Booking opens on 26 October 2026 at 15.00 (UK time) and closes on 21 December 2026 at 18.00 (UK time). Arrange the booking as soon as it opens rather than at the end of the period.

Other universities

Several universities ask for the TMUA, but each decides its own requirement and uses the result in its own way. The January sitting is not available to Oxford or Cambridge applicants, except mature-college and Astrophoria Foundation Year applicants. Read each course page rather than assuming that dates or rules carry across.

Interview and application

The application and the test are the evidence you can prepare

Because interviews are not standard, the UCAS application and the test result are the evidence you can prepare. Treat an interview as a possibility to be ready for, not as part of the plan. The UCAS deadline of 13 January 2027 falls only days after the January test window, which leaves little room for delay.

How Avandy prepares

One plan for course choice, written work and the test

Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor work within one advisory plan that shapes course choice, written work and admissions tests. Support is tailored to the student, and no outcome is promised.

Questions

Questions applicants ask

Does Imperial still use the MAT?

No. Imperial states that the Mathematics Admissions Test is no longer used. The TMUA is required instead.

Can I still take the TMUA for 2027 entry?

The October 2026 window has passed. The January window runs from 4 to 8 January 2027 (8 January only in China, Hong Kong and Macau), with booking from 26 October to 21 December 2026.

I am also applying to Oxford or Cambridge. Can I use the January sitting?

Not for those applications: the January sitting does not apply to Oxford or Cambridge applicants, except mature-college and Astrophoria Foundation Year applicants, who apply in January. Imperial accepts either 2027-entry sitting.

Will I be interviewed?

Interviews are not standard, but some candidates may be offered one at the admissions tutors' discretion.

Do I need Computer Science at school?

Imperial recommends Computer Science and Physics but requires Mathematics, and prefers Further Mathematics.
