Imperial Materials PhD: one named academic, a two-page proposal, a Master's expected

The Imperial Materials Research PhD normally expects a Master's degree in addition to a Bachelor's at UK Upper Second Class Honours level, and says it is vital to have a member of academic staff support your application even if you are self-funded. You can apply with only one academic per Department, send a research proposal of no more than two pages and a short personal statement, and have only two live applications in a given academic year. For a materials, physics, chemistry or engineering graduate, the decision is which academic to name and whether your proposal fits their field. This guide sets out what Imperial's pages say, which carry no entry-year label, marks Avandy's judgment separately and ends with next steps.

What Imperial asks for in Imperial Materials Research PhD

Taken from Imperial's Department of Materials Postgraduate Research (PhD) page and its Materials PhD FAQs and read on 1 November 2026. The decision

Which academic will you name, and does your record match the norm?

This guide concerns only the Imperial research degree. The reading below is Avandy's judgment (heuristic), built from what the pages say.

It fits if

you hold or will hold a Master's and an upper-second Bachelor's, and can name one academic whose field your proposal fits.

Think again if

you plan to apply to several academics in the Department at once. The process allows only one per Department.

Still finishing your degree

Imperial accepts applications from students still finishing, with a conditional offer until the requirements are met.

How the application is read

Documents, one academic and a decision window

Imperial asks you to complete the form in My Imperial under Materials Research PhD and upload a CV, transcripts, a personal statement, a research proposal and an English certificate, with the contact details of two referees. Referees upload their own letters, and your prospective supervisor cannot be one of them. The admissions team reviews documents, which usually takes about a week but can take up to a month in busy periods, and the academic then has up to five weeks to decide.

Funding and routes

Departmental scholarships and Centres for Doctoral Training

The Department's pages describe a competitive Departmental scholarship scheme, fully funded projects and EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training that offer four-year studentships in Materials. This guide states no amounts or deadlines. These pages carry no entry-year label and may change.

Avandy's judgment

Where an application can go wrong

These points are Avandy's heuristic reading of the pages. They are not Imperial rules and carry no probability.

Choosing an academic by name alone

Only one can be named, so check their field against your proposal.

Naming a referee who is your prospective supervisor

Imperial says this is not allowed.

Writing a long proposal

Imperial recommends no more than two pages.

Expecting a fast decision

The page expects six to nine weeks in total.

Support

Independent support with the research statement and fit

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with Imperial College London or any of its departments, and it has no relationship with any member of staff. Support sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant and a PhD-level Academic Mentor help the applicant test a research idea against the department's published research areas and plan their own statement. Support here is limited to testing a research idea against the department's published research themes and planning the applicant's own statements; it does not extend to contacting staff on the applicant's behalf. Avandy does not write or submit any part of an application, cannot arrange a supervisor and promises no outcome or funding.
