LSE Accounting and Finance BSc: entry and subject choices

LSE's BSc Accounting and Finance is a combined honours degree in which time is split equally between accounting and finance and other related disciplines. It is not LSE's BSc Economics, and its entry rules differ: Mathematics is essential, but Further Mathematics is not required, no previous study of accounting is needed and LSE says it does not interview applicants. This guide is written for families planning 2028 entry. Everything cycle-specific in it was last verified for 2027 entry, because LSE has not yet published its 2028-entry requirements.

What LSE asks for in Accounting and Finance

Taken from LSE's programme page and undergraduate How to apply page and last verified on 20 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; LSE's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A*AA with an A in Mathematics, or IB 39 with 766

The A-level offer is A*AA with an A in Mathematics, and the contextual offer is AAA with an A in Mathematics. The IB Diploma offer is 39 points overall with 766 in Higher Level subjects including a 6 in Higher Level Mathematics, and the contextual IB offer is 38 points with 666 including a 6 in Higher Level Mathematics. As a minimum LSE asks for GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade B (6). LSE says it cannot guarantee an offer even when the standard requirements are met.

Mathematics is essential; Further Mathematics and accounting are not required

A-level Mathematics or equivalent is essential because of the analytical nature of the programme. Further Mathematics is not required, though LSE will consider students with Mathematics, Further Mathematics and an essay-based subject. Previous study of accounting is not required. There are no set subject combinations, but traditional academic subjects are preferred, including A-level Accounting, and LSE expects at least two full A levels or equivalent in those subjects.

No interview

LSE states that it does not interview applicants for any of its programmes.

A three-year degree, accredited for professional exemptions

The UCAS code is NN34. Students study 12 units over three years plus LSE100. The programme is accredited for exemptions from some professional examinations by ACCA, CIMA (through the Accredited degree accelerated route) and ICAEW.

Official sources

Last verified on 20 October 2026 for 2027 entry, on LSE's programme page and undergraduate How to apply page. The 2025 application figures quoted in the guide are history, not a requirement. The programme page lists no additional admissions test; check it again for 2028 entry.

The programme

Accounting and finance, split with related disciplines

LSE says students on this programme study 12 units over three years, plus LSE100, and that their time is split equally between accounting and finance and other related disciplines. Year 1 includes introductory courses in accounting and finance, economics, mathematics and statistics, and students choose one of two mathematics courses: Quantitative Methods (Mathematics) or Methods in calculus and linear algebra.

Not Economics, not pure Finance

How this degree differs from LSE's other courses

The degree sits in the Department of Accounting, and the entry rules reflect that. Compared with LSE's BSc Economics guide, this programme asks for A*AA with an A in Mathematics rather than an A* in Mathematics, does not list Further Mathematics as desirable, and does not name an admissions test on its page. Read each LSE course page for what it requires, and avoid carrying one course's rule over to another.

Subjects

Mathematics is essential, and the rest is open

The subject rule is short, and the detail is in what LSE says it prefers.

Mathematics

A-level Mathematics or equivalent is essential. LSE also looks for an aptitude and willingness to develop further mathematical knowledge.

Further Mathematics

Not required. LSE will consider students with Mathematics, Further Mathematics and an essay-based subject.

Accounting

Previous study of accounting at GCSE, A level or equivalent is not required, although A-level Accounting is among the traditional academic subjects LSE prefers.

Combinations

There are no set combinations. LSE expects at least two full A levels or equivalent in traditional academic subjects and looks for combinations that show analytical and writing abilities.

The application

No interview: what carries the case

LSE states that it does not interview applicants for any of its programmes. It says it considers the UCAS form, including predicted and achieved grades, subjects and subject combinations, the personal statement, the teacher's reference and educational circumstances, so those are the places the case is made. LSE also says competition for places is high and that it cannot guarantee an offer even to applicants who meet its standard requirements.

Context

How competitive the programme has been

LSE's page shows, for 2025, 2,849 applications, an intake of 156 and a ratio of 18:1. These are historical figures about a past cohort. They are not a requirement and they do not predict any individual result.

After the degree

Professional exemptions, and what LSE does not promise

The programme is accredited for exemptions from some professional examinations by ACCA, CIMA (through the Accredited degree accelerated route) and ICAEW. LSE says which exemptions you can claim depends on the optional courses you take, so choose options with that in view if professional accountancy is your aim. Accreditation is not a promise of any career outcome.
