LSE Economic History and Geography: an even split of two subjects

LSE's BSc Economic History and Geography divides the student's time equally between its two subjects and ends with a year-long dissertation in historical economic geography. It asks for a lower A-level offer than most LSE economics-related degrees, AAB with Economics or History, and no Mathematics. The decision is whether you want a genuine joint degree rather than a single subject.

Official sources

Read on 31 October 2026 on LSE's BSc Economic History and Geography programme page, which describes 2027 entry. LSE's general entry requirements, the fees pages and the 2028-entry values were not read, and the page lists no additional admissions test or interview so none is stated and are not stated.

The degree

Economic change and place, today and in the past

LSE says students examine the impact of economic change on geography, in today's world and in the past, and how different processes affect the economic and social geography of modern societies. Questions such as why some countries are rich and others poor run through the degree. Research projects using primary historical sources lead to a year-long dissertation in historical economic geography.

Is it the right degree?

A joint degree against the single subjects

The balance is stated: equal time on both subjects.

Choose Economic History and Geography if

you want history and geography in equal measure and are drawn to questions about place and economic change.

Choose Economic History if

you want the historical discipline alone. Avandy's LSE Economic History guide covers it.

Choose Geography with Economics if

you want geography first, with mathematics and economics, and need A-level Mathematics. Avandy's guide to it covers the difference.

Entry rules

AAB with Economics or History, and no Mathematics requirement
