LSE Environment and Sustainable Development with Economics: the quantitative version

LSE's BSc Environment and Sustainable Development with Economics adds microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative methods and applied environmental economics to the environment and development degree. Unlike the version without Economics, it asks for AAA with an A in Mathematics, or 38 IB points with 766 at higher level including Mathematics, and says A-level Mathematics or equivalent is required. The decision for an applicant is whether the mathematical entry rule and the economics content are what they want.

The degree

Environmental questions with economic tools

LSE's first year combines courses on environmental change and sustainable development with microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods. The second year adds three compulsory environmental courses and economics courses, including applied environmental economics, with one option that can be the overseas field methods course. This guide did not read the full course lists.

Is it the right degree?

With Economics or without

The two degrees share a department and a theme. Avandy's comparison is general.

Choose the Economics version if

you are comfortable with Mathematics at A level and want economic tools applied to environmental questions.

Choose the version without Economics if

you prefer a broader social and natural science approach. Avandy's LSE Environment and Sustainable Development guide covers it.

Choose Economics if

you want the discipline itself. Avandy's LSE Economics guide covers it.

Entry rules

Mathematics is required

The A-level requirement is AAA with an A in Mathematics, and A-level Mathematics or equivalent is required. The IB requirement is 38 points including 766 at higher level, including Mathematics. LSE also says Mathematics, Further Mathematics and one other subject may be considered less competitive than a broader mix. This page states no test scores.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not LSE's.

Is A-level or IB Mathematics a strength?

It is a stated requirement.

Do you want economics tools for environmental policy?

The first two years build them in.

Would the version without Economics suit you better?

It has a different entry rule.
