What LSE asks for in LSE MSc Statistics

Taken from the LSE graduate programme page for the MSc Statistics (application code G4U5, academic year 2027/28) and read on 3 November 2026. The page describes 2027-28 entry; confirm every date and rule on the page before you rely on it.

A 2:1 with substantial statistics and maths

The entry requirement is an upper second class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, including a substantial amount of statistics and mathematics. Competition is strong, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee an offer.

A statement of up to 500 words

The statement should say why you want the programme and why you chose LSE. If your background is outside mathematics or statistics, explain how your experience is relevant and give details of your current studies.

Separate statements for more than one choice

If you apply for more than one choice in the Department of Statistics, the page recommends two separate personal statements.

No fixed deadline

Applications are considered on a rolling basis and close once the programme is full. To be considered for funding, applicants must submit by the funding deadline. The start date is 27 September 2027.

Statistical Inference is compulsory

The compulsory course is Statistical Inference: Principles and Methods, and students take courses to the value of three and a half units from a range of options.

Nine months or part-time

The programme is nine months full-time for Home and Overseas students, or 21 months part-time for Home students.

Fit

What a suitable quantitative background looks like

The page ties eligibility to the content of your degree. The readings below mix LSE's wording with Avandy's judgment, and the labels say which is which.

A statistics or mathematics graduate

Fits the rule. The aim is to foster an interest in theoretical and applied statistics and equip students for work as a professional statistician.

A graduate from economics, finance or another quantitative discipline

The page says a relevant discipline including a substantial amount of statistics and mathematics. List the statistics and mathematics modules you have taken, with their content.

A graduate from a less mathematical discipline

The page asks applicants whose background is outside mathematics or statistics to explain how their experience is relevant and to give details of their current studies. The substantial-content condition still applies.

Decision

Choosing the options

The compulsory course is small and most of the degree is options.

Options

More advanced statistical modelling, computational methods, statistical computing and advanced probability theory, plus specialist courses from the Departments of Methodology, Mathematics and Economics.

Indicative routes

The page offers indicative pathways, including a route with a broad area of applications. Check the current list in the School Calendar.

Avandy's judgment (heuristic, not a university rule)

Decide your application area before you write the statement, since the page frames the degree as statistics applied to social sciences, economics and finance.

Application

The statement and the rolling process

The page sets a short statement and lists extra advice for part-time and multiple-choice applicants.

Statement

Concise, up to 500 words: why this programme, why LSE, and brief details of your academic background and aspirations.

Part-time

Address your motivations to study part-time, how you will balance study with part-time work and, if applicable, your employer's support.

Avandy's judgment (heuristic, not a university rule)

With 500 words, spend most of them on the statistics and mathematics you have studied and on one applied question you want to pursue. Apply early within rolling admissions.

Planning

Planning for 2027/28 entry

What to do now

Map your degree to statistics and mathematics content, decide full-time or part-time, draft the statement and note the funding deadline if relevant. Re-read the page before submitting, because LSE says programmes can change.

Support

Independent support with course choice and the written application

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with the London School of Economics and Political Science or any of its departments.
