LSE Sociology: inequality, society and a dissertation of your choice

LSE's BSc Sociology is taught in what it describes as the first sociology department in the UK. It asks for AAB with no fixed subjects, spends the first year on three compulsory sociology courses and ends with a dissertation on a topic you choose. The decision is whether you want sociology's focus on social processes and institutions rather than the fieldwork methods of anthropology or the policy focus of social policy.

What LSE asks for in Sociology

Taken from LSE's BSc Sociology programme page and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; LSE's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A three-year BSc, L301

Delivered by the Department of Sociology; LSE says it was the first sociology department in the UK.

AAB, with a broad subject mix

The standard A-level requirement is AAB. LSE says taking Mathematics, Further Mathematics and one other subject may be considered a less competitive combination.

The IB requirement is 37 points overall with 666 at higher level.

A sociology-heavy first year

Three compulsory sociology courses and one option from outside the department.

A dissertation and a language option

The final year includes a sociology dissertation; students can also add a language specialism to the degree award.

Read on 31 October 2026 on LSE's BSc Sociology programme page, which describes 2027 entry. LSE's general entry requirements, the fees pages, the language-specialism pages and the 2028-entry values were not read, and the page lists no additional admissions test or interview so none is stated and are not stated.

The degree

Social processes, institutions and theory

LSE says students develop a firm grasp of the main principles of contemporary sociology, compare different societies, look at social processes and institutions and examine theories about the nature of social existence. They learn practical skills from the start, including different research methods. The programme takes three years: three compulsory sociology courses in year one and a dissertation in the final year.

Entry rules

AAB and a broad mix of subjects

The standard A-level requirement is AAB, with a contextual offer of ABB. LSE says it expects at least two full A-levels in traditional academic subjects and that a combination of Mathematics, Further Mathematics and one other subject may be considered less competitive than a broader mix. The IB requirement is 37 points overall with 666 at higher level. The page lists no additional test or interview. This page states no scores.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not LSE's.

Are social inequality and institutions your questions?

They run through the programme's description.

Do you like writing long essays?

The degree ends with a dissertation of your choice.

Is a language specialism attractive?

It can be added to the degree award.
