Penn M&T: a Wharton and Engineering dual degree, and what the application adds

The Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology is Penn's coordinated dual degree: students are dually admitted to Wharton and the School of Engineering and Applied Science and earn two degrees, a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Applied Science. It admits only 50 to 55 students a year, asks applicants to name a single-degree fallback, and adds two essays to the Penn application. The decision is whether the dual-degree workload and the binding Early Decision implications suit you better than applying to Wharton or Engineering alone.

What Penn says about Penn M&T

Taken from Penn's Jerome Fisher M&T Program Admissions and Fast Facts pages, Penn Admissions' Specialised Degree Programs, Four Schools, International Applicants and Testing pages and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; Penn's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

Two degrees, admitted by two schools

Accepted applicants are dually admitted to Wharton and the School of Engineering and Applied Science and pursue two full degrees concurrently. The programme is designed to be completed in four years, and about 85% of students do.

50 to 55 students a year

M&T says it admits 50 to 55 students each year who display extraordinary leadership, creativity, initiative and teamwork, and who have excelled in demanding classes including physics and calculus.

A secondary single-degree choice

Applicants select M&T first and must indicate a single degree as a secondary option, considered only after all opportunities for dual placement are evaluated.

Two additional essays

The Penn Writing Supplement has two M&T essays, of 50 to 400 words and 50 to 200 words, and both must be answered.

The SAT or ACT is required

Penn applicants are required to submit SAT or ACT scores, with a hardship waiver and no minimum score.

What it is

A small coordinated dual degree within Penn's school structure

Penn says you apply to one of four undergraduate schools or a coordinated dual-degree programme. M&T is one of Penn's specialised programmes, alongside Huntsman, LSM, NHCM, VIPER and VIC, and Penn notes that these programmes allow you to obtain bachelor's degrees with coursework from at least two schools, are relatively small, and carry a greater workload. M&T students earn a Bachelor of Economics from Wharton and either a BSE or BAS from Penn Engineering. Penn says most students find that a single-degree programme is the right choice for them and still have plenty of opportunities to engage with other schools.

Applying

First choice M&T, fallback single degree, and two extra essays

Applicants complete the Penn application and select M&T as the first choice, and because the programme is highly selective they must name a single-degree secondary choice that is considered only after M&T placements are evaluated. The secondary choice can be waived only through binding Early Decision to M&T. M&T says accepted Early Decision applicants are contractually bound to attend. Two programme essays ask how you would use M&T for problems requiring both engineering and business perspectives (50 to 400 words) and to describe something you created, designed, improved or built (50 to 200 words). Regular Decision acceptance is non-binding.

A-levels, the IB and testing

The Penn international position applies

Penn's international FAQ says it has no explicit course or minimum score requirements and accepts predicted scores where final results are not available. M&T says candidates have typically excelled in demanding classes including physics and calculus. Penn requires the SAT or ACT, with a hardship waiver and no minimum score. The pages read do not state a score, and this guide states none.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not Penn's.

Do you need both business and engineering?

The programme is for problems requiring both perspectives. If one dominates, a single degree may fit better.

Which single degree is your fallback?

You must name one unless you waive it through binding Early Decision.

Can you live with the binding rules and the workload?

Early Decision is contractually binding for M&T, and dual degrees carry a greater workload.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules Penn has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means Penn published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means Penn has not yet published it.

Support

Independent support with planning your own application

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here is limited to understanding the requirements and planning the applicant's own work; Avandy does not write or edit essays, does not submit any materials and has no partnership with Penn or M&T. No outcome is promised.
