Princeton ORFE: a quantitative engineering department chosen after you arrive

Princeton does not admit students to Operations Research and Financial Engineering. Students apply to the university, and engineers choose one of six departments at the end of the first year. ORFE's own page describes a common core of statistics, probability and optimisation, with advanced courses in finance, machine learning and other applications, and a senior thesis or independent project. For an A-level or IB applicant, the questions are what the department is, how it is entered and what Princeton asks for in the application, including the SAT or ACT for fall 2028. This guide claims no direct admission to ORFE.

What Princeton says about Princeton ORFE

Taken from Princeton Admission's Academics, Standardized Testing and International Students pages and the ORFE department's undergraduate page, read on 31 October 2026. The pages carry no entry-year label, so for a 2028-entry application every statement below is evidence for the previous cycle and may change; check Princeton's pages for the 2028-entry details.

Apply to the university, choose a department later

Princeton says students apply to the university, not to departments, and engineers choose one of six engineering departments at the end of the first year.

A common core

All ORFE students start from statistics, probability and stochastic processes, and optimisation.

Finance is one application among many

Advanced courses cover finance, econometrics, operations research, networks, e-commerce, transportation and machine learning.

A thesis or an independent project

ORFE students choose between a senior thesis and an independent project.

SAT or ACT for fall 2028

Princeton says first-year applicants seeking to enrol in fall 2028 will need to submit either SAT or ACT scores.

The pages carry no entry-year label. The department

What ORFE says it teaches

ORFE describes its programme as a modern liberal education built on science and technology, centred on mathematical modelling under uncertainty: developing models, bringing real-world data into them and making optimal decisions. Every student takes the same core, then advanced courses in computational methods and applications, then a coherent set of electives. The department notes that students draw on economics, computer science, applied mathematics and public policy courses, and lists minors such as Finance, Statistics and Machine Learning and Computer Science. Requirements follow the general rules of the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Is it the right department?

ORFE, Computer Science or a UK Financial Mathematics degree

Princeton describes each as separate, and the choice is made after admission. Avandy's comparison is general.

ORFE fits if

you want a quantitative engineering degree built on probability, statistics and optimisation, with finance as one application.

Computer Science fits if

your interest is computing itself. Avandy's Princeton Computer Science guide covers the A.B. and B.S.E. routes.

A UK Financial Mathematics degree fits if

you already know the subject you want to specialise in; UK courses admit you to it, Princeton admits you to the university.

Admission and testing

SAT or ACT for fall 2028, and your school record

Princeton says first-year applicants seeking to enrol in fall 2028 will need to submit either SAT or ACT scores. For international applicants, the academic record should include internal grades and achieved marks from external exams, for example British A-Level or the International Baccalaureate, and the school official should submit predicted or achieved results as they become available. This guide states no score.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not Princeton's.

Do you enjoy probability and optimisation?

They are the common core of every ORFE student.

Are you ready to choose a department after the first year?

Engineers choose at the end of their first year.

Can you plan the SAT or ACT with your A levels or IB?

Princeton says one is needed for fall 2028.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Princeton's pages carry no entry-year label, so nothing on them is confirmed for 2028 entry. Use them to understand the structure of the application, then check Princeton's own pages for the 2028-entry details.

The requirements and descriptions on the pages read on 31 October 2026, which carry no entry-year label

These are the best guide to what to prepare. Princeton has not confirmed them for 2028 entry.

Deadlines, fees, financial aid and any department prerequisites not quoted here: not stated

This guide has not read them. Check Princeton for the values that apply to your application year.

What to do now

Read the ORFE undergraduate page and plan the SAT or ACT.

Support

Independent support with planning your own application

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with Princeton University or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here is limited to understanding the requirements and planning the applicant's own work; Avandy does not write or edit essays, does not submit any materials and has no partnership with Princeton University. No outcome is promised.

Questions

Questions applicants ask

Can I apply directly to Princeton ORFE?

No. Princeton says students apply to the university, not to departments, and engineers choose a department at the end of the first year.

What does every ORFE student study?

A common core of statistics, probability and stochastic processes, and optimisation.

Is there a thesis?

ORFE students choose between a senior thesis and an independent project.

Do I need the SAT or ACT?

Princeton says first-year applicants seeking to enrol in fall 2028 will need to submit either SAT or ACT scores.

How should an A-level or IB student present results?

Princeton says the academic record should include internal grades and marks from external exams such as British A-Level or the IB, with predicted or achieved results sent by the school official.

Are these the rules for 2028 entry?

No. They are Princeton's wording with no entry-year label. Check Princeton's pages again when Princeton publishes its 2028-entry requirements.
