UCL Biological Sciences: flexible biology with a pathway to choose

UCL's Biological Sciences BSc keeps the entry rule open: Biology plus one of four other subjects. It is built to be flexible, combining a broad base of biological knowledge with a pathway such as genetics, zoology or biodiversity and conservation. The decision against UCL's neighbouring degrees is how settled your interest is and how much choice you want.

For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; UCL's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

UCAS C900, three years

UCL describes a three-year flexible BSc with a chosen specialism.

AAA with Biology plus one other subject

The A-level requirement is AAA, with Biology plus one of Chemistry, Life and Health Sciences, Mathematics or Physics.

IB 18 points with Biology at 6

18 points in three higher level subjects including Biology at grade 6 and one from Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics.

A broad base with a specialism

UCL says students combine a broad base of biological knowledge with a chosen specialism.

Named specialist pathways

Pathways include Biodiversity and Conservation, Cell and Developmental Biology, Genetics, Human Genetics and Zoology.

The course

A broad base and a chosen pathway

UCL describes Biological Sciences as being at the centre of its research and says its flexible BSc lets students shape the course to their research and career goals. Named pathways include Biodiversity and Conservation, Cell and Developmental Biology, Genetics, Human Genetics and Zoology.

Is it the right degree?

Biological Sciences against Biochemistry and Neuroscience

Several UCL biology degrees differ mainly by how fixed the route is.

Choose Biological Sciences if

you want the widest choice of biology specialisms and a flexible subject rule.

Choose Biochemistry if

you take Chemistry and Mathematics and want the molecular focus. Avandy's UCL Biochemistry guide covers it.

Choose Neuroscience if

your interest is the nervous system. Avandy's UCL Neuroscience guide covers it.

Entry rules

Biology plus one other subject

A-level applicants need AAA with Biology plus one of Chemistry, Life and Health Sciences, Mathematics or Physics, and at least two A-levels from UCL's list of preferred subjects. IB applicants need 18 points in three higher level subjects including a 6 in Biology and one of Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics. UCL's page lists no admissions test or interview. This page states no scores.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Do you know which pathway you want?

Genetics, zoology and conservation lead to different modules.

Is Biology your strongest subject?

It is required at A level and Higher Level.

Do you want flexibility more than a fixed route?

That is the degree's design.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules UCL has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means UCL published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means UCL has not yet published it.

Support

Independent support with course choice and preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with University College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here means course-fit advice, subject mentoring and ethical preparation; Avandy gives no scores or probabilities and does not write applications. No outcome is promised.
