UCL Chemical Engineering MEng: a lower headline offer and no test

UCL's Chemical Engineering MEng is accredited by IChemE and asks for AAA with Mathematics and Chemistry, or 38 IB points, with no admissions test and no interview. Imperial's Chemical Engineering course, by Avandy's record, asks for A*A*A, the ESAT and interview days. The difference in headline requirements is large, but the decision is not simply about difficulty: it is about the selection process you would rather meet, the final-year routes on offer and the department each can offer.

What UCL asks for in Chemical Engineering

Taken from UCL's Chemical Engineering MEng course page (a saved copy that UCL labels as possibly not showing recent changes) and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; UCL's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A four-year IChemE-accredited MEng, H801

UCL says the course is fully accredited by IChemE and meets the educational requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. BEng and MEng share Years 1 to 3.

AAA with Mathematics and Chemistry, or 38 IB points

The A-level requirement is AAA with Mathematics and Chemistry required. The IB requirement is 38 points, with 18 points in three higher level subjects including 6,6 in Mathematics and Chemistry.

No admissions test or interview

UCL says the department does not interview or test candidates. UK-based offer holders are typically invited to visit.

Five final-year routes

MEng students can follow the standard route or the Chemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Engineering Mathematics or Study Abroad routes.

Integrated Engineering Programme

The course forms part of UCL's IEP, with interdisciplinary and team-based activities and IEP Minor options.

The course

Common Years 1 to 3, then a final-year route

UCL describes foundations in sustainable process design, thermodynamics and reaction engineering, with the BEng and MEng courses sharing a curriculum for Years 1 to 3 and suitably qualified BEng students able to transfer to the MEng at the end of Year 3. Through the IEP Minor options students explore complementary fields such as programming, business, sustainability or molecular engineering. In Year 3 students work in small teams to design a complete chemical plant. The final MEng year includes a research project, an advanced design project and advanced options, with routes in Chemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Engineering Mathematics or Study Abroad. UCL labels the page as a saved copy that may not show recent changes.

UCL or Imperial

Two London chemical engineering degrees with different selection

Avandy's Imperial Chemical Engineering guide records Imperial's own published rules.

UCL asks for

AAA with Mathematics and Chemistry, IB 38, and no test or interview.

Imperial asks for

A*A*A with A* in Chemistry and Mathematics, the ESAT in Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Chemistry, and interview days, according to Avandy's guide.

A lower headline offer does not make a course easier to complete. Compare modules, final-year routes and accreditation.

Entry rules

Mathematics and Chemistry required, no test

The A-level standard is AAA with Mathematics and Chemistry required; Biology, Economics, Geography, Physics and Psychology are preferred as a third subject. The IB standard is 38 points with 18 in three higher level subjects including 6,6 in Mathematics and Chemistry. The department does not interview or test candidates. UCL notes that applicants who miss the direct entry standard may be eligible for its Engineering Foundation Year.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Do you prefer a no-test selection process?

UCL's department uses neither a test nor an interview.

Which final-year route fits?

Chemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Engineering Mathematics and Study Abroad routes each change the last year.

Is Chemistry your strongest science?

Mathematics and Chemistry are both required.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules UCL has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means UCL published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means UCL has not yet published it.

Support

Independent support with course choice and preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with University College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here means course-fit advice and mathematics and chemistry mentoring; Avandy gives no scores or probabilities and does not write submitted work. No outcome is promised.
