UCL Geography and Economics: integrating two disciplines, with A* Mathematics

UCL's Geography and Economics BSc is a combined-studies degree that integrates the two subjects to address society's most pressing problems. It is much more demanding at entry than UCL's single-subject Geography: A*AA with A* in Mathematics. The decision is whether you want the integration and are ready for the mathematics.

The course

Two disciplines learned to be used together

UCL says students gain a comprehensive foundation in the principles and approaches of geography and economics and learn to integrate them, conducting cross-disciplinary research and social scientific analysis and deepening their understanding of political and economic events.

Is it the right degree?

Against the single-subject degrees and LSE

The Mathematics requirement is the sharpest difference.

Choose Geography and Economics if

you want both disciplines integrated and have A* in Mathematics.

Choose UCL Geography if

you want geography with no required subject. Avandy's UCL Geography guide covers it.

Compare LSE Geography with Economics if

you want a 75/25 balance. Avandy's LSE guide records its own rules.

Entry rules

A* in Mathematics plus an essay-based subject

A-level applicants need A*AA with A* in Mathematics, plus one more subject preferably Geography, History or another essay-based subject. IB applicants need 19 points in three higher level subjects including a 7 in Mathematics. UCL's page lists no admissions test or interview. This page states no scores.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Is A* in Mathematics realistic?

It is required.

Do you want both subjects integrated?

That is the design.

Do you have an essay-based second subject?

Geography, History or another is preferred.
