UCL Human Sciences: biology, society and history in one degree

UCL's Human Sciences BSc rests on a simple claim: human beings cannot be fully understood through a single discipline. It combines life sciences with social and historical sciences, and its subject rule is light: any one of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics. A four-year version adds a year abroad. The decision is whether you want that breadth in place of a single science.

UCAS BCL0, three years

UCL describes a three-year BSc, with a four-year version that adds a year abroad.

AAA with one science subject

The A-level requirement is AAA, with one of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics required and Biology preferred.

IB 18 points with one science at 6

18 points in three higher level subjects including one of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics at grade 6.

Life sciences with social and historical sciences

UCL says the degree combines them to pursue students' own lines of enquiry.

Only one science subject needed

Any one of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics meets the subject rule.

The course

Many disciplines, one species

UCL describes a distinctive BSc that lets students pursue their own lines of enquiry across life sciences and social and historical sciences, seeking answers to complex questions facing our species. A four-year version adds an extra year studying abroad.

Is it the right degree?

Human Sciences against single-subject degrees

The breadth is the degree's identity.

Choose Human Sciences if

you want to combine biology with social and historical perspectives.

Choose Biological Sciences if

you want depth in biology. Avandy's UCL Biological Sciences guide covers it.

Choose Anthropology if

your interest is human societies and cultures. Avandy's UCL Anthropology guide covers it.

Entry rules

One science, and a broad profile

A-level applicants need AAA with one of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, with Biology preferred, and at least two A-levels from UCL's list of preferred subjects. IB applicants need 18 points in three higher level subjects including a 6 in one of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics. UCL's page lists no admissions test or interview. This page states no scores.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Do you like questions that cross disciplines?

The degree is built on them.

Is a year abroad attractive?

It is a separate four-year version.

Do you hold a science subject?

One of four is enough.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication
