UCL Mathematics BSc: two routes to the offer and a broad advanced syllabus

UCL's Mathematics BSc is a single-subject degree with over 30 specialist modules and an offer in two forms: A*A*A with A*A* in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, or A*AA with A*A in those subjects together with a 2 in any STEP paper or a distinction in the Mathematics AEA. UCL advises applying first for the four-year MSci, because transfer to the BSc is possible. Imperial and Cambridge ask for different tests and grades, so the useful comparison is of the kind of mathematical evidence each asks you to produce.

What UCL asks for in Mathematics

Taken from UCL's Mathematics BSc course page (a saved copy that UCL labels as possibly not showing recent changes) and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; UCL's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A three-year BSc or four-year MSci, G100

UCL says the first two years of both courses are identical and advises applying initially for the MSci, since transfer to the BSc is possible during the first three years.

A*A*A, or A*AA with STEP or AEA

The standard is A*A*A with A*A* in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, or A*AA with A*A in those subjects together with a 2 in any STEP paper or a distinction in the Mathematics AEA.

IB 40 points, or 39 with STEP or AEA

The IB requirement is 40 points overall with 20 points in three higher level subjects including 7 in Mathematics, or 39 points with a 2 in any STEP paper or a distinction in the Mathematics AEA.

No resits

UCL says the course does not consider applicants who are resitting qualifications.

Initiative beyond the curriculum

UCL says it values applicants who show initiative beyond the school curriculum and who enjoy tackling challenging problems.

Read on 31 October 2026 on UCL's Mathematics BSc course page (a saved copy that UCL labels as possibly not showing recent changes), which describes 2027 entry. UCL's preferred A level subjects list, the 'How we assess your application' page, the STEP and AEA pages, fees, the contextual-offer details and the 2028-entry values were not read, and the page lists no mandatory admissions test or interview so none is stated and are not stated.

The course

Core modules in the first year and a half, then 30 or so options

UCL describes core modules in algebra, analysis, applied mathematics and mathematical methods over the first year and a half, delivered through lectures, problem sheets, small-group tutorials and computer labs. In the second half of the second year students choose four of eight options, including probability and statistics, number theory and mathematical physics, and can take electives outside the department. In the third year there are around 30 advanced options, in areas such as geometry, analysis, combinatorics, fluid mechanics, mathematical physics, financial mathematics and mathematical biology. UCL labels the page as a saved copy that may not show recent changes.

Which mathematics degree?

UCL, Imperial or Cambridge?

Avandy has guides to Imperial Mathematics and Cambridge Mathematics, each with different tests.

UCL asks for

A*A*A with Further Mathematics, or A*AA with a 2 in any STEP paper or a distinction in the Mathematics AEA, and no mandatory test on the page read.

Imperial asks for

A*A*A to A*A*AA with A* in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and Avandy's guide records that applicants applying by the last TMUA booking deadline are required to take the TMUA.

Cambridge uses STEP

Avandy's Cambridge Mathematics guide covers its own rules. Preparing STEP can serve more than one application.

Entry rules

Further Mathematics plus either A*A*A or a STEP or AEA result

The A-level standard is A*A*A including A*A* in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, or A*AA with A*A in those subjects and a 2 in any STEP paper or a distinction in the Mathematics AEA; the contextual offer is A*A*C. Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, English, Physics and Statistics are preferred other subjects. The IB standard is 40 points with 7 in Mathematics, or 39 points with a STEP or AEA result; UCL accepts only Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at higher level. The course does not consider resitters. The page lists no mandatory admissions test or interview.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Can you take Further Mathematics?

Both routes need A*A* or A*A in Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Do you prefer STEP or an A*A*A route?

The STEP or AEA route lowers the third A-level grade; it requires a strong paper.

BSc or MSci first?

UCL advises applying for the MSci first because you can transfer later.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules UCL has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means UCL published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means UCL has not yet published it.

Support

Independent support with course choice and preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with University College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here means course-fit advice and mathematics mentoring, including STEP preparation; Avandy gives no scores or probabilities and does not supply test questions. No outcome is promised.

Questions

Questions applicants ask

What are the UCL Mathematics entry requirements?

A*A*A with A*A* in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, or A*AA with A*A in those subjects and a 2 in any STEP paper or a distinction in the Mathematics AEA; or IB 40 points. This is UCL's wording for 2027 entry.

Do I need Further Mathematics?

Both A-level routes are stated with Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Do I have to take STEP?

Only for the A*AA route. The A*A*A route does not require it.

Should I apply for the BSc or MSci?

UCL advises applying initially for the MSci, as transfer to the BSc is possible during the first three years.

Are resits accepted?

No. UCL says this course does not consider applicants who are resitting qualifications.

Are these the rules for 2028 entry?

No. They are UCL's wording for the 2027 application cycle. Check the course page again when UCL publishes its 2028-entry requirements.
