UCL Medicine MBBS BSc: UCAT, academic subjects and interviews

UCL's Medicine course asks for Biology and Chemistry, with an A* in either, at least two A levels from UCL's preferred list, the UCAT in the year of application and a multiple mini interview stage. It does not accept resits. The course has an intercalated BSc built in and is accredited by the General Medical Council. The decision for a medical applicant is whether UCL's rules, not just its name, suit their qualifications. This guide states no UCAT score or probability. Everything cycle-specific here is UCL's wording for 2027 entry, taken from a page UCL labels as a saved copy; nothing below is a confirmed 2028 requirement.

Official information · last verified for 2027 entry

What UCL asks for in Medicine

Taken from UCL's Medicine MBBS BSc course page (a saved copy that UCL labels as possibly not showing recent changes) and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; UCL's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A*AA with Biology and Chemistry, either at A*

The A-level grades are A*AA, with Biology and Chemistry required and either at A*. The GCSEs are English Language and Mathematics at grade B or 6. At least two A level subjects should come from UCL's preferred list.

The IB: 39 points with 6 and 7 in Biology and Chemistry

The IB requirement is 39 points, with a total of 19 points in three Higher Level subjects including 6 and 7 in Biology and Chemistry in either order, and no Higher Level score below 5.

No resits

This course does not accept resits, meaning a second or subsequent attempt to improve a qualification outcome for which you already hold an award.

The UCAT is required, in the year you apply

Students applying for Medicine must take the University Clinical Aptitude Test in the year of application.

Multiple mini interviews

UCL currently uses multiple mini interviews, which took place between December and March in the cycle described. Your reflections on work experience may be assessed at interview.

Official sources

Read on 31 October 2026 on UCL's Medicine MBBS BSc course page (a saved copy that UCL labels as possibly not showing recent changes), which describes 2027 entry. UCL's list of preferred A level subjects, its Selection Procedure and 'How we assess your application' pages, work-experience guidance, fees, the contextual-offer details and the 2028-entry values were not read or are not stated. UCL labels the page read as a saved copy that may not show recent changes.

The course

Five or six years, with an intercalated BSc built in

UCL says the integrated course takes five years if you already have a BSc and six if you do not. It begins with systems-based modules that provide the scientific knowledge for clinical training, and from the first year students meet patients. Learning becomes increasingly placement based, in clinical settings in and around London. Students complete an intercalated BSc in Year 3, except UK graduates, and in the final year can complete an eight-week elective placement at a hospital of their choice in the UK or overseas. The degree is accredited by the General Medical Council as a Primary Medical Qualification allowing entry into the UK Foundation Programme. This guide makes no claim about the specific placements any student will receive.

Choosing between courses

Is UCL the right medical school to include?

Each UK medical school sets its own academic rules and selection. Compare them by rule.

Choose UCL Medicine if

you can offer Biology and Chemistry with an A* in one, can draw on UCL's preferred subject list, are comfortable with a degree that builds in a BSc, and are ready for an MMI stage.

Check Imperial Medicine separately

Imperial has its own academic rule, UCAT use and MMIs. The Imperial Medicine guide in this series sets them out; do not assume they match UCL's.

Hong Kong medical degrees differ

HKU and CUHK have their own routes for A-level and IB applicants, covered in their own guides.

Reading the offer

Biology and Chemistry, one preferred-subjects rule, and no resits

The A-level standard is A*AA, with Biology and Chemistry required and either at A*. The IB standard is 39 points, with 19 points in three Higher Level subjects including 6 and 7 in Biology and Chemistry in either order and no Higher Level score below 5. Two further rules deserve attention. UCL says at least two A level subjects should be taken from its list of preferred A level subjects, which was not read for this guide, so check it before choosing a third subject. And the course does not accept resits, so a gap year to improve grades is not a route on this page. UCL also asks for English Language and Mathematics at GCSE grade B or 6.

The UCAT and the interview

A required test and an MMI stage that asks about experience

UCL says students applying for Medicine must take the UCAT in the year of application. It does not publish a score on the page read, and this guide states none. UCL currently uses multiple mini interviews between December and March. It recommends that applicants understand what a career in medicine involves, gain experience of working with other people, reflect on the attributes needed and, if possible, gain insight into healthcare professions. UCL says your reflections on what you learnt from work experience may be assessed at interview and that a small selection of candidates may be asked to provide evidence of the experience they describe. The attributes UCL says it looks for include compassion, empathy, personal organisation, honesty, team working, leadership and resilience, and alignment with the values of the NHS Constitution.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Can you say what you learnt from caring experience?

UCL may assess your reflections and may ask for evidence. Keep an honest record of what you did and learned.

Does your subject list meet the preferred-subjects rule?

Check UCL's list before you finalise A level choices. It cannot be fixed after the application.

Is a no-resit course compatible with your plan?

If your plan includes retaking, this course will not fit. Know that before you apply.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules UCL has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means UCL published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means UCL has not yet published it.

Grades, the Biology and Chemistry rule, the preferred-subjects expectation, the UCAT requirement and the MMI stage: last verified for 2027 entry

These are the best guide to what to prepare. UCL has not confirmed them for 2028 entry.

UCAT dates, the UCAS deadline, interview dates and any change to selection arrangements: awaiting publication for 2028 entry

Check UCL's Medicine course page for the 2028-entry values when they appear.

What to do now

Secure Biology and Chemistry, read UCL's preferred subjects list and selection pages, and plan UCAT preparation and reflective experience.

Support

Independent support with course choice and UCAT preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with University College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Relevant science support, UCAT preparation and ethical interview practice help a student prepare; Avandy gives no scores, thresholds or probabilities and does not supply interview questions. No outcome is promised.
