UCL Pharmacy MPharm: the professional route into pharmacy

UCL's Pharmacy MPharm is a professional degree that trains pharmacists in the scientific basis of therapy and in clinical care, with placements in community pharmacies, hospital pharmacies and GP practices. It asks for AAB with Chemistry and one other science or Mathematics, or 36 IB points, and selection includes interviews and tests, Occupational Health and enhanced DBS checks, and evidence of professional values. It is not Medicine and not a pharmaceutical sciences degree; it leads to a regulated profession, so the entry process tests readiness for that profession as well as grades.

The course

Science, clinical skills and placements

UCL says pharmacists need a deep understanding of several disciplines: the anatomy, physiology and normal function of body systems, the diseases that affect them, and the chemistry, pharmacology, formulation and clinical use of drugs. The course places an increased emphasis on experiential learning placements with community pharmacies, teaching hospital pharmacies, GP practices and specialist providers, including six major NHS hospital trusts in central London. Students plan and carry out an extended 60-credit research project in the third and fourth years, with an option to work on it overseas with PharmAlliance partners. UCL labels the page as a saved copy that may not show recent changes.

Pharmacy or Medicine

A regulated profession with different selection

Avandy's UCL Medicine guide records Medicine's own rules.

Choose Pharmacy if

you want to become a pharmacist, working as a medicines expert in community, hospital or clinical settings.

Choose Medicine if

clinical practice as a doctor is the aim. Avandy's guide records Biology and Chemistry, the UCAT and MMIs.

Pharmaceutical sciences

A science degree in pharmaceutical sciences is a different course with its own page. This guide does not cover it, and UCL's course page for it should be read separately.

Entry rules

Chemistry, a second science, and professional readiness

The A-level standard is AAB with Chemistry and either Biology, Mathematics or Physics, and GCSE English Language and Mathematics at B or 6. The IB standard is 36 points with 17 in three higher level subjects including Chemistry and one of Biology, Mathematics or Physics, with none below 5. Interviews and tests are usually held from December to April, and UCL does not publish the content on the page read. Successful applicants must pass Occupational Health and enhanced DBS checks and show professional values; UCL points to its School of Pharmacy page on its values and selection, which should be read before applying.
