HKU MBBS for A-level and IB Diploma applicants: the route and the expectations

HKU's MBBS is the University of Hong Kong's medical degree, recognised as a primary qualification by the Medical Council of Hong Kong. A-level and IB Diploma applicants apply through HKU's International/Non-JUPAS scheme, not through the HKDSE-based JUPAS route. For 2027 entry HKU stated a lower boundary of four A* at A-level or 43 at IB, Biology or Chemistry, English, a good working knowledge of Chinese and interview performance, and said that meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. These are last verified for 2027 entry, not confirmed for 2028.

What HKU asks for in Medicine

Taken from HKU Admissions' MBBS programme page, its International Qualifications page and the Admissions Standards that page displays and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; HKU's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A-level lower boundary, last verified for 2027 entry

HKU stated an expected lower boundary of four A*, excluding Chinese and English language related subjects and a list of non-standard subjects, and a subject requirement of grade E or P3 or above in A-level Biology or Chemistry.

IB Diploma lower boundary, last verified for 2027 entry

HKU stated an expected lower boundary of 43 and grade 4 or above in Biology (HL) or Chemistry (HL).

A good working knowledge of Chinese

The additional requirements for both A-level and IB applicants include a good working knowledge of Chinese, priority to first-choice candidates and interview performance.

The route is International/Non-JUPAS

HKU's International Qualifications page is for international qualifications other than the Mainland Gaokao, and for local students with a qualification other than the HKDSE. JUPAS standards are separate and not used here.

A professional qualification with a residency

HKU's MBBS is recognised as a primary qualification by the Medical Council of Hong Kong, and graduates must complete a one-year residency in a public hospital before registering as a licensed doctor in Hong Kong.

Official sources

Read on 31 October 2026 on HKU Admissions' MBBS programme page, its International Qualifications page and the Admissions Standards that page displays, which describes 2027 entry. HKU's JUPAS pages, the Faculty of Medicine's own website, the MBBS(DMS) and MBBS(GET) pathways, fees and scholarships, the application guide, the English Language Requirement alternatives page, interview dates and the 2028-entry values were not read or are not stated.

The route

International/Non-JUPAS, not JUPAS

HKU's International Qualifications page describes the International/Non-JUPAS admissions scheme, for non-local students with an international qualification or other national examination qualification other than the Mainland Gaokao, and for local students with an international qualification or pending international qualification other than the HKDSE. A-level and IB Diploma applicants use this scheme. HKU's separate JUPAS pages serve HKDSE students and set their own standards; they were not read for this guide and no JUPAS figure is used here. HKU says non-local applicants must submit their applications directly to the university.

The stated standards

What HKU stated for 2027 entry, and what it does not guarantee

For 2027 entry, the Admissions Standards tool on HKU's International Qualifications page gave A-level applicants to the MBBS an expected lower boundary of four A*, excluding Chinese and English language related subjects, Critical Thinking, General Studies, Global Perspectives and Research, Knowledge and Enquiry, Project Work, Thinking Skills and the Extended Project Qualification, with grade E or P3 or above in A-level Biology or Chemistry. For the IB Diploma it gave 43, with grade 4 or above in Biology (HL) or Chemistry (HL). These are lower boundaries. HKU says satisfying the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, and that decisions rest on academic performance and other factors including interview performance, personal statement, references and other documents.

Language

English and Chinese

For A-level applicants HKU's English Language Requirement includes grade B or grade 6 or above in English Language at GCSE or GCE O Level, with other qualifications listed as alternatives. For IB applicants it includes grade 5 in English Language A (HL/SL) or grade 6 in English Language B (HL/SL). The additional requirements for the MBBS also include a good working knowledge of Chinese. HKU's pages as read do not say how Chinese is assessed, so ask the admissions office rather than assuming, and do not treat the English requirement as a substitute.

Results and interview

Predicted results, the application system and the interview

HKU says applicants must input all their academic results, including predicted and actual results, into the application system rather than only uploading documents, and that a counsellor can do this where the counsellor holds the results. Interview performance is listed among the additional requirements for the MBBS, and HKU says priority should be given to first-choice candidates. The pages as read do not describe the interview format. Avandy therefore does not describe it either, and does not invent likely questions.

The profession

What the degree leads to, in HKU's words

HKU says its MBBS is recognised as a primary qualification by the Medical Council of Hong Kong, and that after graduation you must complete a one-year residency in a public hospital before registering as a licensed doctor in Hong Kong. It describes problem-based, small-group tutorials, early clinical exposure, and a strong emphasis on ethical principles and humanitarian values. A student who is considering medicine in Hong Kong should read these as expectations of the profession, not only as features of a course.

A decision framework

Three questions before you apply

This is Avandy's own framework, not HKU's.

Do your subjects include Biology or Chemistry?

The stated subject requirement names A-level Biology or Chemistry, or IB Biology (HL) or Chemistry (HL).

Is your Chinese good enough for the stated requirement?

HKU lists a good working knowledge of Chinese. Ask how it is assessed before you decide.

Are you ready for a Hong Kong medical career?

The degree is followed by a one-year residency in a public hospital in Hong Kong before registration.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules HKU has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means HKU published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means HKU has not yet published it.

What to do now

Check your subjects and Chinese against the stated requirements, ask your school how predicted results will be entered, and read HKU's International Qualifications page for your year.

Support

Independent support with planning your own application

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with The University of Hong Kong or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here is limited to understanding the requirements and planning the applicant's own work; Avandy does not write or edit personal statements, does not submit any application on a student's behalf and has no partnership with HKU. No outcome is promised.
