Imperial Biomedical Engineering MEng: entry, selection and fit

Imperial's Biomedical Engineering MEng applies engineering to the human body, and its entry route surprises applicants who expect an admissions test: the department does not use one. It asks for Mathematics and Physics, selects on the UCAS application, and may invite some applicants to an online interview. This guide is written for families planning 2028 entry. Everything cycle-specific in it was last verified for 2027 entry, so treat it as the best guide to preparation and not as the 2028 requirement.

What Imperial asks for in Biomedical Engineering

Taken from Imperial's official Biomedical Engineering MEng course page and read on 25 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; Imperial's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A*AA with Mathematics and Physics

The minimum A-level standard is A*AA, to include an A* in Mathematics, an A in Physics and an A in a third subject. The typical offer is A*AA to A*A*A with three A levels, and typical offers can be higher than the minimum. General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted, and an offer-holder must pass the practical endorsement in all science subjects that form part of the offer.

The IB: 39 points with three 6s at Higher Level

The minimum IB standard is 39 points, to include 6 in Mathematics, 6 in Physics and 6 in a third subject at Higher Level, and the typical offer is 40 points. Imperial accepts both IB Mathematics syllabi at Higher Level, but says Analysis and Approaches is preferred.

No admissions test

Imperial says this department does not use a test as part of its selection process. Selectors also consider the personal statement and the references.

A possible online interview

You may be invited to an online interview if your UCAS application indicates that you are likely to satisfy the entry requirements and you demonstrate interest and motivation to study the course.

No ATAS, and year abroad or year in industry options

Imperial says an ATAS certificate is not required for this course. The course includes opportunities to spend a year abroad or a year in industry, which students apply for during the third year; applicants apply for BH9C in the first instance.

Official sources

Read on 25 October 2026 on Imperial's Biomedical Engineering MEng course page, which describes 2027 entry. The 2025 applications-to-places ratio quoted in the guide is history, not a requirement. Application deadlines and interview dates are cycle-specific and are not stated. The Department's own website and the year abroad and year in industry details were not read.

The course

Engineering applied to the human body

Imperial says that as a biomedical engineer you learn to use technology to help people live longer, healthier and happier lives, applying fundamental engineering principles and knowledge of the human body. Students can tailor their engineering interests to biomedical, electrical, mechanical or computational bioengineering. The MEng lasts four years, with a year abroad or a year in industry available as options. This is an engineering degree from a Department of Bioengineering, which is different from a biomedical science degree such as Oxford's or UCL's, so check those pages if your interest is research in the life sciences.

Reading the offer

Mathematics and Physics at the top, plus a third subject

The grades combine one A* with two As, and the IB asks for three sixes at Higher Level.

A levels

A*AA including an A* in Mathematics, an A in Physics and an A in a third subject. The typical offer is A*AA to A*A*A with three A levels.

The IB

39 points, to include 6 in Mathematics, 6 in Physics and 6 in a third subject at Higher Level. The typical offer is 40 points.

Typical offers

Imperial says typical offers are based on the offers made by each department to at least 50% of its 2025-entry A level and IB applicants who were yet to achieve their grades, and can be higher than the minimum.

Selection

No test: the application itself carries the weight

Imperial says this department does not use a test as part of its selection process. Predicted grades and prior educational achievement are important but not the only thing that drives the decision; selectors also consider the personal statement and the references to understand whether there is a good match between you and the subject and department. When assessing applications Imperial says it considers examination results, your motivation and understanding of biomedical engineering as a career, your potential for leadership and teamwork, your interests and the referee's report. You may be invited to an online interview if your UCAS application indicates that you are likely to satisfy the entry requirements and you demonstrate interest and motivation.

International applicants

No ATAS certificate

Imperial says an ATAS certificate is not required for students applying for this course. ATAS is a UK government scheme, so check the current rules for your own situation.

Context

How competitive the course has been

Imperial's page shows 7 applications for every place for 2025. That is a historical figure about a past cohort. It is not a requirement and it does not predict any individual result.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules Imperial has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means Imperial published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means Imperial has not yet published it.

Grades, subject rules, the absence of a test and the interview approach: last verified for 2027 entry

These are the best guide to what to prepare. Imperial has not confirmed them for 2028 entry.

Application deadline and interview dates: awaiting publication for 2028 entry

What to do now

Secure Mathematics and Physics at the top grade, choose a strong third subject, and build concrete evidence of interest in healthcare engineering for the personal statement.

Support

Independent support with course strategy and preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with Imperial College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each programme.
