A four-year integrated MSci, J703
Imperial says the course develops a deep understanding of Biotechnology and Biochemistry over four years, with a seven-month research project in the final year.
Undergraduate · Imperial Biotechnology MSci
Imperial's Biotechnology MSci is a four-year integrated Master's that joins biochemistry with the applied side of the biotechnology industry: commercialising technology, entrepreneurship and intellectual property. It asks for the same grades as the BSc, AAA or IB 38 with Chemistry, and the ESAT in Mathematics 1, Chemistry and Biology. The page also says the course is new, introduced for 2026 entry, so no typical-offer data is shown. The decision is whether the industry-facing, Master's-level route suits you more than Biochemistry or Biological Sciences.
Official information · last verified for 2027 entry
Taken from Imperial's Biotechnology MSci course page and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; Imperial's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.
Imperial says the course develops a deep understanding of Biotechnology and Biochemistry over four years, with a seven-month research project in the final year.
The A-level standard is AAA to include A in Chemistry, A in Biology, Mathematics or Physics, and a third subject. The IB standard is 38 points with 6 in Chemistry and 6 in Biology, Mathematics or Physics at Higher Level.
You must sit the ESAT in three modules: Mathematics 1, Chemistry and Biology.
Imperial says the department generally does not hold interviews.
Imperial says the course was introduced for 2026 entry, so typical-offer information is not available. This guide states none.

The course
Imperial describes studying living systems at the molecular and cellular level and chemical processes within organisms, alongside the applied biochemistry and biotechnology industries, including commercialising technology, entrepreneurship and intellectual property. A Life Science skills programme provides training in quantitative skills, programming, statistics, and writing and presentation. In year 3 students can specialise in synthetic biology, systems biology, cancer, metabolic engineering, structural biology and drug design, or neuroscience. Laboratory and computational practical work helps students design biochemical and biotechnological experiments and analyse results, and the final year ends with a seven-month research project and research skills training.
Choosing between degrees
Imperial says to apply for the BSc or the MSci and not both, and the BSc and MSci share entry grades.
you want a Master's-level route that connects biochemistry to industry and entrepreneurship, and you are comfortable committing to four years.
the molecular science is the aim. Imperial notes it is possible to transfer from the Biochemistry MSci onto the Biochemistry or Biotechnology BSc degrees, normally up to the end of Year 2. Avandy's Imperial Biochemistry guide covers that route.
organisms, ecology and evolution matter more than molecules. Avandy's Imperial Biological Sciences guide covers it, and Imperial does not allow a transfer from Biochemistry to Biological Sciences.
Entry rules
The A-level standard is AAA to include Chemistry, a second subject from Biology, Mathematics or Physics, and a third subject. The IB standard is 38 points with 6 in Chemistry and 6 in the second subject at Higher Level. You must sit the ESAT in Mathematics 1, Chemistry and Biology. General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted. Imperial says the department generally does not hold interviews. Because the course is new, the page shows no typical-offer information, and this guide states none.
A decision framework
This is Avandy's own framework, not Imperial's.
Commercialisation, entrepreneurship and intellectual property are part of the course. A pure-research aim may fit Biochemistry better.
The MSci is four years. The BSc route shares entry grades, but you apply for one or the other.
It is required at A level and Higher Level and tested in the ESAT.
Planning for 2028 entry
Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules Imperial has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means Imperial published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means Imperial has not yet published it.
These are the best guide to what to prepare. Imperial has not confirmed them for 2028 entry.
Check Imperial's course page for the 2028-entry values when they appear.
Confirm Chemistry and a second science, read the ESAT specification and decide between the three life-science degrees.
Support
Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with Imperial College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here means course-fit advice, chemistry and biology mentoring and ESAT preparation; Avandy gives no scores or probabilities and does not supply test questions. No outcome is promised.
