Imperial Mathematics and Computer Science BEng: a new joint course

Imperial's Mathematics and Computer Science BEng is a three-year joint degree delivered by the Departments of Computing and Mathematics, and Imperial's page says it is a new course for 2027 entry. It asks for A*A*A including A* in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, or 41 IB points, and the TMUA is required. Because it is new, the page shows no typical offers and this guide states none. Whether the course is available for 2028 entry, and on what terms, must be checked on Imperial's pages when they are published. The decision is whether a joint maths-and-computing route is right, rather than standalone Mathematics or Computing.

What Imperial asks for in Mathematics and Computer Science

Taken from Imperial's Mathematics and Computer Science BEng course page and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; Imperial's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A new three-year BEng, October 2027 start

Imperial's page shows a three-year BEng, UCAS code GG14, starting in October 2027, delivered by the Departments of Computing and Mathematics. It says this is a new course for 2027 entry.

A*A*A with Mathematics and Further Mathematics, or 41 IB points

The minimum A-level standard is A*A*A including A* in Mathematics and A* in Further Mathematics and an A in a useful subject. The IB standard is 41 points with 7 in Mathematics and 7 in another relevant subject at Higher Level.

The TMUA is required

You must sit the Test for Mathematics for University Admission. Imperial says it no longer uses the Mathematics Admissions Test.

Interviews are not standard

Interviews may be offered to some candidates at the discretion of the admissions tutors.

No typical offers yet

Imperial says information is not yet available for this new course, so there is no typical offer to cite.

The course

Programming and algorithms with analysis and statistics

Imperial describes combining the programming and algorithm skills of a computer scientist with the analysis and statistics understanding of a mathematician, to support work in artificial intelligence and machine learning, mathematical finance and other statistical and dynamical processes. The first year has nine core modules, including Principled Programming, Logic and Reasoning, Analysis, Calculus and Applications, Linear Algebra and Groups, Graphs and Algorithms, Probability and Statistics and Machine Learning in Action. The second year covers the principles of engineering large systems with core modules such as Practical Systems Engineering, Computer Systems, Software Engineering and Real Analysis and Topology, plus one Computing and three Mathematics options. In the final year students take an I-Explore module, may do an individual project and choose from a wide list of Computing and Mathematics electives.

Joint or standalone

When the joint degree is the better choice

Avandy has separate guides to Imperial Mathematics and Imperial Computing. Their entry rules differ, so compare by course.

Choose the joint degree if

you want both the proof-based mathematics and the software-engineering training in one three-year BEng, with the freedom to specialise later.

Choose standalone Mathematics if

pure and applied mathematics are the centre of your interest. Avandy's Imperial Mathematics guide covers its rules, including the TMUA and Further Mathematics.

Choose Computing if

systems, software and artificial intelligence are the priority. Avandy's Imperial Computing guide covers that MEng.

Entry rules

Top grades, Further Mathematics and the TMUA

The A-level standard is A*A*A including A* in Mathematics and Further Mathematics and an A in a useful subject, with Computer Science and Physics recommended. The IB standard is 41 points with 7 in Mathematics and 7 in another relevant subject at Higher Level; Analysis and Approaches is preferred. Imperial can make special cases for schools that do not offer Further Mathematics and is often guided by TMUA performance. You must sit the TMUA, a computer-based multiple-choice test of mathematical thinking. Interviews are not standard. Because the course is new, no typical offers are shown, and the availability and terms for 2028 entry must be checked on Imperial's pages.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not Imperial's.

Is your school offering Further Mathematics?

A* in Further Mathematics is part of the standard. If it is not offered, Imperial says to ask your teacher to say so in the UCAS reference.

Do you like both proof and programming?

The first year combines analysis and algebra with programming and machine learning.

Can you plan around a new course?

No historical offers exist. Check Imperial's course page for the 2028-entry details and keep a standalone option in mind.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules Imperial has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means Imperial published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means Imperial has not yet published it.

Grades, the Further Mathematics rule, the TMUA requirement and the interview policy: last verified for 2027 entry, for a course Imperial describes as new

These are the best guide to what to prepare. Imperial has not confirmed them, or the course's availability, for 2028 entry.

What to do now

Plan Mathematics and Further Mathematics, practise TMUA-style reasoning and keep a standalone Mathematics or Computing option in mind.

Support

Independent support with course choice and preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with Imperial College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here means course-fit advice, mathematics and computing mentoring and TMUA preparation; Avandy gives no scores or probabilities and does not supply test questions. No outcome is promised.

Questions

Questions applicants ask
