Imperial Mathematics with Statistics: a statistics specialisation inside Mathematics

Imperial's Mathematics with Statistics BSc is taught by the Department of Mathematics on the same demanding entry standard as its other mathematics degrees. What makes it distinct is the specialisation: a Statistics degree needs at least five modules from a defined group, on applied probability, simulation and risk-based decisions. The decision is whether you want to commit to statistics within mathematics.

What Imperial asks for in Mathematics with Statistics

Taken from Imperial's Mathematics with Statistics BSc course page and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; Imperial's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A three-year BSc, G1G3

Delivered by the Department of Mathematics; students choose at least five Group A modules to graduate with a Statistics degree.

A*A*A with Further Mathematics

The A-level range is A*A*A to A*A*AA including A* in Mathematics and A* in Further Mathematics. Imperial can make special cases for schools that do not offer Further Mathematics.

The TMUA is expected

Imperial says all applicants should take the TMUA; those who cannot will typically be asked to sit a STEP paper.

IB 39 with Higher Level Mathematics 7

The IB standard is 39 points with 7 in Mathematics and 6 in another subject at Higher Level.

No regular interviews

Imperial says it does not currently use interviews as part of its regular admissions process.

The specialisation

What makes this Mathematics degree a Statistics degree

Imperial says the studies cover algebra, analysis, probability and statistics, and that, as part of the Statistics specialisation, students examine topics such as applied probability, stochastic simulation, and games and risk-based decisions. To graduate with a Statistics degree students choose at least five modules from Group A. The page does not say a student cannot also take other options.

Statistics or standard Mathematics?

A specialisation inside the same department

The Department of Mathematics teaches several degrees on very similar entry rules, so the decision is about content.

Choose Mathematics with Statistics if

probability, simulation and data-driven questions are what draw you to mathematics.

Choose Mathematics if

you want to keep pure and applied mathematics open. Avandy's Imperial Mathematics guide covers it.

Look at Economics, Finance and Data Science if

you want economics as the subject. Avandy's Imperial Economics, Finance and Data Science guide covers it.

Entry rules

A*A*A, Further Mathematics and the TMUA

A-level applicants need A*A*A to A*A*AA including A* in Mathematics and A* in Further Mathematics; Imperial can make special cases for schools without Further Mathematics and is often guided by TMUA performance. IB applicants need 39 points with 7 in Mathematics at Higher Level. The TMUA is expected of all applicants. Imperial does not currently use interviews as part of its regular process. This page states no scores.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not Imperial's.

Is statistics your reason for choosing mathematics?

The specialisation requires several defined modules.

Can you prepare for the TMUA?

It is a core part of the application.

Does your school offer Further Mathematics?

If not, Imperial says teachers should say so in the reference.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules Imperial has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means Imperial published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means Imperial has not yet published it.

Support

Independent support with course choice and preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with Imperial College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here means course-fit advice, subject mentoring and ethical preparation; Avandy gives no scores or probabilities and does not supply interview or test questions. No outcome is promised.

Questions

Questions applicants ask

What does Imperial Mathematics with Statistics require?

A*A*A to A*A*AA including A* in Mathematics and A* in Further Mathematics, or IB 39 with 7 in Mathematics at Higher Level, in Imperial's wording for 2027 entry.

Is the TMUA required?

Imperial says all applicants should take it; those who cannot will typically be asked to sit a STEP paper.

What if my school does not offer Further Mathematics?

Imperial says it can make special cases for such schools and encourages applications from them.

Is there an interview?

Imperial says it does not currently use interviews as part of its regular admissions process.

How is it different from Mathematics?

A Statistics degree needs at least five modules from Group A, on topics such as applied probability and stochastic simulation.

Are these the rules for 2028 entry?
