UCL Chemistry: a complete chemistry education with room to range

UCL's Chemistry BSc asks for AAA with Chemistry and a second science, a lower grade standard than its physics degrees, and is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry. It stresses breadth: optional modules in life sciences, mathematics, management and languages. The decision against Imperial is mostly one of structure and ambition, since Imperial's chemistry route is an integrated MSci.

UCAS F100, three years

UCL describes a three-year BSc giving a complete education in chemistry with optional modules in other areas.

AAA with Chemistry and a second science

The A-level requirement is AAA, with Chemistry and at least one of Biology, Physics and Mathematics required.

IB 18 points in three Higher Level subjects

6 in Chemistry and 6 in one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics, with no higher level score below 5.

Royal Society of Chemistry accreditation

The BSc has been accredited as partially meeting the learning requirements for Chartered Chemist status.

The course

A complete education in chemistry, with options outside it

UCL describes a three-year course covering all the important areas of chemistry while allowing optional modules in other areas such as life sciences, mathematics, management and languages. The Royal Society of Chemistry has accredited the BSc as partially meeting the learning requirements for Chartered Chemist status.

Is it the right degree?

UCL Chemistry against Imperial and the specialisms

The structure of the degree is the main difference between the two universities.

Choose UCL Chemistry BSc if

you want a three-year degree with room for options outside chemistry.

Choose Imperial Chemistry MSci if

you want a four-year research-led route. Avandy's Imperial Chemistry MSci guide covers it.

Choose Natural Sciences if

you want to keep other sciences open. Avandy's UCL Natural Sciences guide covers it.

Entry rules

Chemistry plus a second science

A-level applicants need AAA with Chemistry and at least one of Biology, Physics and Mathematics, and at least two A-levels from UCL's list of preferred subjects. IB applicants need 18 points in three higher level subjects including a 6 in Chemistry and a 6 in one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics. UCL's page lists no admissions test or interview. This page states no scores.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Do you want a three-year degree?

This is a BSc; the integrated Master's routes are separate courses.

Would options in management or languages appeal?

UCL names them as options.

Is a second science in place?

Biology, Physics or Mathematics is required alongside Chemistry.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules UCL has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels.
