UCL Natural Sciences: a broad first year, then you choose

UCL's Natural Sciences BSc is for students who want to delay specialising. The first year is broad and leads to one of many specialisms from the second year, and Mathematics is required alongside at least one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. It is a different proposition from a single-science degree, and from the specialist Natural Sciences course at Cambridge.

UCAS CFG0, three years

UCL describes a three-year BSc whose broad first year leads to a chosen specialism from the second year.

A*AA with Mathematics and a science

The A-level requirement is A*AA, with Mathematics and at least one of Biology, Chemistry and Physics required.

IB 19 points in three Higher Level subjects

Grade 6 in Mathematics and at least one of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with no higher level score below 5.

A broad first year, then a specialism

UCL says specialisms are chosen from the second year and reflect its interdisciplinary research expertise.

A Study Abroad version

The course is also available with Study Abroad, adding a year in another country.

The course

Develop a scientific identity before you specialise

UCL says the course is designed to help students develop a scientific identity, with specialisms that reflect its interdisciplinary research strengths and today's global challenges. The specialism is chosen from the second year; some specialisms need particular A-levels and first-year foundation modules, so the first-year choices matter.

Is it the right degree?

Natural Sciences against single-science degrees

The flexibility is the point, and its cost is that some specialisms have their own prerequisites.

Choose Natural Sciences if

you want to keep several sciences open and choose your direction after a year.

Choose UCL Chemistry or Physics if

you already know your science. Avandy's UCL Chemistry and UCL Physics guides cover them.

Compare Imperial's single-science degrees if

you want depth from the start. Avandy's Imperial Chemistry MSci guide records its own rules.

Entry rules

Mathematics plus a science, and a high grade standard

A-level applicants need A*AA with Mathematics and at least one of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and at least two A-levels from UCL's list of preferred subjects. IB applicants need 19 points in three higher level subjects including a 6 in Mathematics and at least one of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. UCL's page lists no admissions test or interview. This page states no scores.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Do you want to delay specialising?

The specialism is chosen from the second year.

Is Mathematics a strength?

It is required at A level and Higher Level.

Have you checked each specialism's prerequisites?

Some need a particular A-level or first-year foundation modules.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules UCL has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means UCL published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means UCL has not yet published it.

Support

Independent support with course choice and preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with University College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here means course-fit advice, subject mentoring and ethical preparation; Avandy gives no scores or probabilities and does not write applications. No outcome is promised.
