UCL Nutrition and Medical Sciences: a route to registered nutritionist status

UCL's Nutrition and Medical Sciences BSc is accredited by the Association for Nutrition and leads to eligibility for the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists as an associate. It studies nutrition from metabolism to global public health, and asks for Biology at grade A plus a second science. The decision is whether a nutrition career, not only the biology of it, is what you want.

The course

Nutrition from metabolism to public health

UCL says students explore nutrition at all stages of life, from metabolism, whole body and global public health perspectives, on a research-led course based at the Bloomsbury campus and the Royal Free Hospital. Accreditation by the Association for Nutrition gives graduates eligibility to apply as Registered Associate Nutritionists, provided the core-competency modules are passed.

Is it the right degree?

Nutrition against its neighbours

UCL teaches several health-related degrees.

Choose Nutrition and Medical Sciences if

you want to become a registered nutritionist and study food, metabolism and health together.

Choose Biomedical Sciences if

your interest is laboratory medical science. Avandy's UCL Biomedical Sciences guide covers it.

Choose Population Health Sciences if

you want epidemiology and public health. Avandy's guide to it covers that.

Entry rules

Biology at grade A plus a second science

A-level applicants need AAA with Biology at grade A and either Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, and at least two A-levels from UCL's list of preferred subjects. IB applicants need 18 points in three higher level subjects including a 6 in Biology and a second science. UCL's page lists no admissions test or interview. This page states no scores.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Is a nutrition career the goal?

Accreditation supports that route.

Is Biology strong enough for grade A?

It is required at that grade.

Do you understand the competency requirement?

UCL says students must pass the core-competency modules for AfN accreditation.
