CUHK Medicine for A-level and IB Diploma applicants: the Non-JUPAS route

CUHK's Faculty of Medicine sets out its Non-JUPAS requirements for applicants who are not using the HKDSE, with separate entries for the IB Diploma and for GCE and International A-levels. It asks IB students for six subjects including three at Higher Level and a final score of at least 42 out of 45, and A-level students for four subjects excluding Chinese and the EPQ, with Chemistry or Biology in both cases. Other medical entrance tests are not mandatory. CUHK's pages carry no entry-year label, so everything here is evidence for the previous cycle, not a confirmed 2028 requirement.

What CUHK says about the Non-JUPAS route for IB and A-level applicants

Taken from CUHK Undergraduate Admissions' MBChB programme page and the Faculty of Medicine's Non-JUPAS Programme and Admissions page, read on 31 October 2026. The pages carry no entry-year label, so for a 2028-entry application every statement below is evidence for the previous cycle and may change; check CUHK's pages for the 2028-entry details.

IB Diploma: six subjects and a stated minimum

IB students should take six subjects including three at Higher Level, with Chemistry or Biology at Higher Level and both recommended. The stated minimum is a final score of at least 42 out of 45 with at least 6, 7, 7 in the Higher Level subjects.

A-level: four subjects, Chinese and EPQ excluded

GCE and International A-level students should take four A-level subjects, excluding Chinese and the EPQ, with Chemistry or Biology and both preferable. Further Maths is not counted as a separate subject.

Results timing and raw marks

At least three of the four A-level grades should be obtained within a 12-month period, and students without old scaled marks must provide raw marks and grade boundaries right after results are released.

Medical entrance tests are not mandatory

CUHK says other medical school entrance test results are not mandatory, but that because of keen competition it is increasingly common for applicants to provide them, such as UCAT or MCAT, as strong supporting documents.

Interviews follow results

After results are released, top-ranked students who have not been interviewed before are invited, and a few applicants with outstanding earlier results may be invited for an early interview.

Official sources

Read on 31 October 2026 on CUHK Undergraduate Admissions' MBChB programme page and the Faculty of Medicine's Non-JUPAS Programme and Admissions page, which describes 2027 entry. The pages carry no entry-year label. JUPAS pages, the Dynamic Year 2 (DY2) and FAQ tabs, the Interview tab, the Global Physician-Leadership Stream thresholds, the Graduate Entry Track details, fees, scholarships, dates and deadlines were not read in full and are not stated.

The route

Non-JUPAS, for applicants not using the HKDSE

CUHK's programme page lists the MBChB as open for JUPAS, Non-JUPAS Year 1, Mainland (Gaokao) and International applicants. The Faculty of Medicine's Non-JUPAS page is for applicants who are not using the results of the HKDSE for admission purposes, and gives separate entries for the IB, GCE and International A-levels and other curricula. A-level and IB applicants should use these entries. The JUPAS pages serve HKDSE students and were not read here, and no JUPAS or HKU threshold is used or compared.

The IB Diploma

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, a stated minimum

CUHK says IB students should take six subjects including three Higher Level subjects, with either Chemistry or Biology at Higher Level and both recommended. The minimum requirement it states is a final score of at least 42 out of 45, with grades of at least 6, 7 and 7 in the Higher Level subjects. It describes this as a minimum, so treat it as a floor for consideration, not a prediction of an offer: the pages as read do not say how many applicants who meet it are invited or admitted.

A-levels

Four subjects, with specific rules on counting

CUHK says GCE and International A-level students should take four A-level subjects, excluding Chinese and the EPQ, with Chemistry or Biology and both preferable. Further Maths is not counted as a separate subject, and the raw mark of Maths or Further Maths, whichever is higher, counts towards the total. At least three of the four grades should be obtained within a 12-month period. Because of changes to the A-level examination system, students without the old scaled marks must provide raw marks and grade boundaries right after results are released, which CUHK uses to estimate a percentage mark. The pages as read do not state a specific A-level grade threshold for this entry, so this guide does not state one.

Supporting tests

UCAT and similar tests are supporting documents, not requirements

CUHK says other medical school entrance test results are not mandatory for admission, but that because of keen competition it is increasingly common for applicants to strengthen their profiles by providing relevant results, such as UCAT or MCAT, as strong supporting documents. For a UK-curriculum student, that is a decision to make with care: it is optional, but CUHK itself describes it as increasingly common. The pages as read do not say how such results are weighed, so this guide does not either.

Interviews and the profession

When interviews happen, and what the degree leads to

CUHK says top-ranked students who have not been interviewed before are invited for interview after results are released, and that because A-level and IB results arrive late it may invite a few applicants with outstanding results in earlier examinations or the UKCAT for an early interview. The pages as read do not describe the interview format. The programme page describes a six-year full-time MBChB with a SMART curriculum, and says that after a one-year internship in an approved hospital in Hong Kong graduates become registered medical practitioners. Avandy does not describe likely interview questions, because the pages do not.

A decision framework

Three questions before you apply

This is Avandy's own framework, not CUHK's.

Does your subject set fit the stated rules?

Check Chemistry or Biology, the four-subject rule for A-levels, and six subjects with three at Higher Level for the IB.

Will you take a supporting test?

It is optional, but CUHK calls it increasingly common. Decide early.

Is a Hong Kong medical career the aim?

The degree is followed by a one-year internship in Hong Kong before registration.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

CUHK's pages carry no entry-year label, so nothing on them is confirmed for 2028 entry. Use them to understand the structure of the application, then check CUHK's own pages for the 2028-entry details.

The route, the IB and A-level requirements, the supporting-test statement and the interview statement: read 31 October 2026 with no entry-year label

These are the best guide to what to prepare. CUHK has not confirmed them for 2028 entry.

Dates, deadlines, interview schedule, DY2, GPS thresholds and fees: not stated here

This guide has not read them in full. Check CUHK for the values that apply to your application year.

What to do now

Check your subjects against the stated rules, decide about a supporting medical test, ask your school how raw marks will be provided, and read CUHK's Non-JUPAS page for your year.

Support

Independent support with planning your own application

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with The Chinese University of Hong Kong or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here is limited to understanding the requirements and planning the applicant's own work; Avandy does not write or edit personal statements, does not submit any application on a student's behalf and has no partnership with CUHK. No outcome is promised.

Questions

Questions applicants ask

Do A-level and IB students apply through JUPAS?

No. CUHK's Non-JUPAS page is for applicants who are not using the HKDSE. JUPAS pages were not read for this guide.

What IB score does CUHK state?

A final score of at least 42 out of 45, with grades of at least 6, 7 and 7 in the Higher Level subjects, and six subjects including three at Higher Level.

Does CUHK state A-level grades?

The pages as read state the four-subject rule, the subjects excluded, and timing and raw-mark rules, but not a specific A-level grade threshold.

Do I need the UCAT?

CUHK says other medical entrance test results are not mandatory, but it is increasingly common for applicants to provide them as strong supporting documents.

Is this the same as HKU Medicine?

No. Each university sets its own rules. Read HKU's pages separately.

Are these the rules for 2028 entry?

No. They are CUHK's wording with no entry-year label. Check CUHK's pages again when CUHK publishes its 2028-entry requirements.
