What CUHK says about Quantitative Finance and the overseas qualifications route

Taken from CUHK Undergraduate Admissions' Quantitative Finance programme page, its Overseas / Other Qualifications Requirements page and the Quantitative Finance programme's own Non-JUPAS page, read on 31 October 2026. The pages carry no entry-year label, so for a 2028-entry application every statement below is evidence for the previous cycle and may change; check CUHK's pages for the 2028-entry details.

A quantitative finance degree with mathematics at its core

The programme was established in 1998 and offers courses in finance, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence and information technology. It is a four-year programme in the Faculty of Business Administration.

General minimums, for guidance only

For the IB Diploma CUHK states 30 points out of 45, and for GCE and International A-levels three A-level passes or two plus two AS passes. It says these minimums are for guidance only and that satisfying requirements does not guarantee admission.

Programme-specific requirements exist but are not stated here

CUHK says different programmes have different subject requirements and that applicants must satisfy the additional requirements of the programme. The pages read do not state any for Quantitative Finance.

Selected applicants are interviewed

Because of the volume of Non-JUPAS applicants, only selected applicants are invited for a 15-minute individual interview, in person or by Zoom.

Room to explore

Students may choose 12 credits' worth of courses to explore, including a minor in another area.

Official sources

Read on 31 October 2026 on CUHK Undergraduate Admissions' Quantitative Finance programme page, its Overseas / Other Qualifications Requirements page and the programme's own Non-JUPAS page, which describes 2027 entry. The pages carry no entry-year label. The programme-specific subject requirements and any quantitative-finance prerequisites were not stated on the pages read, so none is described. JUPAS, HKDSE, fees, scholarships, dates, deadlines, the interview schedule and the programme brochure were not read and are not stated.

The programme

What the programme says it is

CUHK says the Quantitative Finance Programme was established in 1998 to train people who aspire to careers in the financial industry, and that it was the first quantitative finance programme in Hong Kong. It is a four-year programme in the Faculty of Business Administration. CUHK says it offers specially designed courses in finance, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence and information technology, practical courses by industry practitioners, and a Financial Trading Laboratory with Bloomberg and Refinitiv terminals. It also says students may choose 12 credits' worth of courses to explore, including a minor in another area. This guide does not compare outcomes or rank the programme against any other finance degree.

The route

The overseas qualifications route and the stated general minimums

The programme page lists Quantitative Finance as open for JUPAS, Non-JUPAS Year 1, Mainland (Gaokao) and International applicants, and the programme's own Non-JUPAS page says the programme is open to students taking examinations other than JUPAS. For overseas qualifications, CUHK's Requirements page states general minimums: for the IB Diploma, 30 points out of 45, and for GCE and International A-levels, three A-level passes or two A-level plus two AS passes, with different programmes having different subject requirements. CUHK says these general minimums are for guidance only, that satisfying requirements does not guarantee admission because admission is competitive, and that applicants must also satisfy the additional requirements of the programme.

What is not stated

No programme-specific subject or grade requirement on the pages read

The pages read give no Quantitative Finance-specific subject requirement, grade or score, and say only that different programmes have different subject requirements and that applicants must meet the programme's additional requirements. This guide therefore does not say that A-level or IB Mathematics is required, or that any score is competitive, because it cannot support either. A student who wants to know whether their subjects are suitable should ask CUHK and read the programme list and the programme's website for the year of application. The 30-point and three-passes figures are the university's general floor, not a prediction of an offer.

Language and interview

English, and the 15-minute interview

CUHK's language requirements include, among others, GCSE, IGCSE or GCE O Level grade C or grade 4, with other qualifications and tests listed. The programme says that, because of the high volume of Non-JUPAS applicants, only selected applicants will be invited for a 15-minute individual interview, and that it can arrange Zoom interviews for those who cannot attend in person. CUHK also says interview performance will be taken into consideration for those invited. The pages read do not describe the interview content, so Avandy does not describe likely questions.

A decision framework

Three questions before you apply

This is Avandy's own framework, not CUHK's.

Do you want mathematics and statistics as the core of a finance degree?

CUHK describes courses in applied mathematics, statistics, artificial intelligence and information technology alongside finance.

Have you checked the programme's own requirements?

The general minimums are only a floor. Ask CUHK for the programme-specific subject requirements for your year.

Are you ready for a short selective interview?

Only selected applicants are invited. The pages do not describe the content, so prepare to explain your interest and your own work.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

CUHK's pages carry no entry-year label, so nothing on them is confirmed for 2028 entry. Use them to understand the structure of the application, then check CUHK's own pages for the 2028-entry details.

The programme description, the general minimums, the guidance-only and no-guarantee statements and the interview statements: read 31 October 2026 with no entry-year label

These are the best guide to what to prepare. CUHK has not confirmed them for 2028 entry.

Programme-specific subject requirements, dates, deadlines, interview schedule and fees: not stated here

This guide has not read them. Check CUHK for the values that apply to your application year.

What to do now

Ask CUHK what Quantitative Finance requires of your subjects, check the general minimums against your predictions, and plan how you will explain your interest in the programme.

Support here is limited to understanding the requirements and planning the applicant's own work; Avandy does not write or edit personal statements, does not submit any application on a student's behalf and has no partnership with CUHK. No outcome is promised.
