UCL Biomedical Engineering MEng: engineering for healthcare, not clinical medicine

UCL's Biomedical Engineering MEng prepares students to design the systems, devices and software that diagnose, monitor and treat disease, as part of an Integrated Engineering Programme. It asks for A*AA with A*A in Mathematics and Physics, or 39 IB points, and the first three years are shared with the BEng. It leads to engineering practice, not clinical practice, so the decision against UCL Medicine, UCL Biomedical Sciences and Imperial's bioengineering courses is about whether you want to build the technology of healthcare or study it.

What UCL asks for in Biomedical Engineering

Taken from UCL's Biomedical Engineering MEng course page (a saved copy that UCL labels as possibly not showing recent changes) and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; UCL's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A four-year MEng at the engineering-medicine interface, H160

UCL says biomedical engineers design the systems, equipment and devices that diagnose, monitor and treat disease. The degree is part of the Integrated Engineering Programme.

A*AA with Mathematics and Physics, or 39 IB points

The A-level requirement is A*AA with A*A in Mathematics and Physics in any order; Biology is acceptable in lieu of Physics if GCSE Physics was A or 7. The IB requirement is 39 points with grades 7 and 6 in Mathematics and Physics.

Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science or Engineering as a third subject

These are preferred as a third subject, in that order, but not essential.

BEng and MEng share three years

Transfer between the BEng and MEng is possible up to the end of Year Three, subject to an average weighted mark of 55% to continue on the MEng.

A year in industry is competitive

The Year in Industry selection is highly competitive and may include academic minimums and an interview with the host company.

Read on 31 October 2026 on UCL's Biomedical Engineering MEng course page (a saved copy that UCL labels as possibly not showing recent changes), which describes 2027 entry. UCL's Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering department pages, fees, the contextual-offer details and the 2028-entry values were not read, and the page lists no admissions test or interview so none is stated and are not stated.

The course

Foundations, depth in physiology and biomechanics, then a major project

UCL says Year One provides a foundation in biomedical engineering covering electronics, mechanics, computing and mathematical modelling for designing complex medical technologies. Year Two builds depth through modules in anatomy and physiology, tissue engineering and biomechanics, and students choose an IEP minor such as programming, entrepreneurship or a foreign language. Year Three includes three advanced biomedical engineering modules, two from the IEP minor and a major individual project, often linked to UCL Engineering research or healthcare partnerships. In Year Four there is a group design project and advanced modules. UCL labels the page as a saved copy that may not show recent changes.

Engineering, medicine or science?

How this differs from UCL Medicine, Biomedical Sciences and Imperial

Avandy has guides to UCL Medicine, UCL Biomedical Sciences and Imperial Biomedical Engineering. Their rules differ.

Choose Biomedical Engineering if

you want to design devices, systems and software for healthcare, with Mathematics and Physics as your strengths.

Choose UCL Biomedical Sciences if

you want to study the science of disease and health. Avandy's guide records AAA with Biology and Chemistry.

Choose Medicine if

clinical practice is the aim. Avandy's UCL Medicine guide records the UCAT and MMIs. Imperial's bioengineering courses are covered in their own guides.

Entry rules

Mathematics and Physics at A*A, with Biology as a limited alternative

The A-level standard is A*AA with A*A in Mathematics and Physics in any order; the contextual offer is AAB with A in Mathematics and B in Physics. Biology is acceptable in place of Physics if GCSE Physics was achieved at A or 7. The IB standard is 39 points with 19 in three higher level subjects including 7 and 6 in Mathematics and Physics and none below 5. GCSE English Language and Mathematics are needed at C or 4. The page lists no admissions test or interview.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Do you want to build or to study healthcare technology?

The degree is engineering, with design projects throughout.

Are Mathematics and Physics your strongest subjects?

Both are required at A*A.

Is the four-year route right?

The first three years are shared with the BEng, and transfer needs an average weighted mark of 55%.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules UCL has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means UCL published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means UCL has not yet published it.

Grades, the Mathematics and Physics requirement, the BEng and MEng structure: last verified for 2027 entry, from a page UCL labels as a saved copy

These are the best guide to what to prepare. UCL has not confirmed them for 2028 entry.

What to do now

Confirm Mathematics and Physics at A*A, read about the IEP and decide between engineering and the sciences.

Support

Independent support with course choice and preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with University College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Support here means course-fit advice and mathematics and physics mentoring; Avandy gives no scores or probabilities and does not write submitted work. No outcome is promised.

Questions

Questions applicants ask

What are the UCL Biomedical Engineering MEng entry requirements?

A*AA at A level with A*A in Mathematics and Physics, or 39 IB points with 7 and 6 in Mathematics and Physics at higher level. This is UCL's wording for 2027 entry.

Can I use Biology instead of Physics?

UCL says Biology is acceptable in lieu of Physics if Physics grade A or 7 was achieved at GCSE.

Is this a route to becoming a doctor?

No. It is an engineering degree. Medicine has its own course with the UCAT and interviews.

Can I switch between the BEng and MEng?

UCL says transfer is possible up to the end of Year Three, subject to an average weighted mark of 55% to continue on the MEng.

Is there an admissions test?

The course page lists none. Check UCL's page for 2028 entry.

Are these the rules for 2028 entry?

No. They are UCL's wording for the 2027 application cycle. Check the course page again when UCL publishes its 2028-entry requirements.
