UCL Management Science BSc: quantitative management and degree fit

UCL's Management Science BSc is a quantitative management degree that draws on mathematics, science and engineering. It asks for A* in Mathematics, prefers a science or social science subject, requires at least two A levels from UCL's preferred list, and the page read lists no admissions test. It is taught by the UCL School of Management and sits in UCL's Integrated Engineering Programme. The decision is whether a student wants management through analytics and decision science, rather than through general management or finance. Everything cycle-specific here is UCL's wording for 2027 entry; nothing below is a confirmed 2028 requirement.

Official information · last verified for 2027 entry

What UCL asks for in Management Science

Taken from UCL's Management Science BSc course page and read on 31 October 2026. For a normal 2028-entry application, made in 2027, every requirement below is last verified for the previous cycle and may change; UCL's 2028-entry requirements and dates are awaiting publication.

A*AA, with A* in Mathematics

The A-level grades are A*AA, with Mathematics at A* required and a Science or Social Sciences subject preferred. At least two A level subjects should be from UCL's preferred list. GCSEs: English Language at grade B or 6 and Mathematics at grade C or 4.

The IB: 39 points with 7 in Mathematics

The IB requirement is 39 points, with 19 points in three Higher Level subjects, including grade 7 in Mathematics, and no score below 5. Either Mathematics syllabus is accepted at Higher Level.

Selection rests on the UCAS application

Selection is made based on the information provided in your UCAS application, and candidates who are made an offer are invited to an offer holder open day. The page read lists no admissions test.

A three-year BSc, with a Year in Industry variant

The BSc has UCAS code N991 and lasts three academic years. A Management Science with Year in Industry variant lasts four years.

Scenario Weeks and an engineering minor

The course includes eight intensive Scenario Weeks of team problem-solving, and sits in UCL's Integrated Engineering Programme, which allows an Engineering Sciences minor in Years 2 and 3.

Official sources

Read on 31 October 2026 on UCL's Management Science BSc course page, which describes 2027 entry. The course

Management taught as a quantitative, evidence-based discipline

UCL says the course equips you with a systematic approach to complex management problems, drawing on mathematics, science and engineering, and developing evidence-based solutions to challenges such as scale, growth, uncertainty and risk. Core modules cover mathematics, critical analytical thinking, data analytics, design, economics, computational thinking and behavioural science, and further modules cover strategy, marketing science, finance, operations management and decision science. It includes eight intensive Scenario Weeks at the School of Management's Canary Wharf campus, in which teams tackle interdisciplinary management problems with support from organisations in the School's network. Students also take part in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences' 'How to Change the World' programme.

Choosing between courses

Management Science, LSE Management or Finance?

Three London degrees look similar from a distance. They differ in what they ask you to be good at.

Choose Management Science if

you want a quantitative route into management through mathematics, data and decision-making, and you are comfortable with an engineering-flavoured programme.

Look at LSE Management if

you want a social-science approach to management. The LSE Management guide in this series sets out that degree's own requirements.

Look at LSE Finance or Data Science if

your interest is financial markets or data. Each has its own guide and subject rules.

Reading the offer

Mathematics at A*, a preferred second subject and a preferred-list rule

The A-level grades are A*AA with Mathematics at A* required. UCL prefers a Science or Social Sciences subject and says at least two A level subjects should be taken from its list of preferred A level subjects, which was not read for this guide, so check it before finalising your subjects. The IB requirement is 39 points with 19 in three Higher Level subjects, grade 7 in Mathematics and no score below 5, and either Mathematics syllabus is accepted at Higher Level. UCL asks for English Language at GCSE grade B or 6 and Mathematics at grade C or 4.

Selection

A written application, then an offer-holder open day

UCL says selection is made based on the information in your UCAS application, and that candidates who are made an offer are invited to a Management Science offer holder open day. The page read lists no admissions test and no interview. The page gave a UCAS deadline of 13 January 2027 for that cycle and noted that applications may stay open after the UCAS Equal Consideration deadline, so check UCAS for the current year. Because the application is read without a test, your grades, subject mix, personal statement and reference matter more than they would on a test-based degree.

A decision framework

Three questions before you commit

This is Avandy's own framework, not UCL's.

Do you like using mathematics to decide under uncertainty?

Take a simple business choice with uncertain outcomes and work out how you would compare the options. If that is absorbing, the programme will be too.

Are you comfortable with an engineering-style programme?

The course sits in the Integrated Engineering Programme and offers an engineering minor. Think about whether that suits you.

Is your subject mix on the preferred list?

Two preferred subjects are expected. Check yours.

Planning for 2028 entry

Planning for 2028 entry: what carries over and what is awaiting publication

Applying for 2028 entry means applying in 2027, under rules UCL has not yet published for that cycle. Each item below carries one of two labels. Last verified for 2027 entry means UCL published it for the previous cycle and it may change. Awaiting publication for 2028 entry means UCL has not yet published it.

Grades, the Mathematics rule, the preferred-subjects expectation and the written-application selection: last verified for 2027 entry

These are the best guide to what to prepare. UCL has not confirmed them for 2028 entry.

UCAS deadline and any change to selection arrangements: awaiting publication for 2028 entry

Check UCL's Management Science course page for the 2028-entry values when they appear.

What to do now

Secure Mathematics at A*, check UCL's preferred subjects list and choose a science or social science subject to go with it.

Support

Independent support with course choice and preparation

Avandy provides independent academic and admissions support. It is not affiliated with University College London or any of its colleges or departments. Preparation sits within the Avandy Trinity Advisory Model: a Strategic Admissions Consultant, a PhD-level Academic Mentor and a Subject-specific Tutor, working to the actual requirements of each course. Mathematics and business-analytics mentoring and personal-statement planning help a student prepare; Avandy does not promise an offer. No outcome is promised.
